30 May 2008

Good Day! How are you doing? I hope that you had an absolutely fabulous on this oh so super Friday. Today is the 30th of May 2008 and that of course means that it is the Friday edition of the Morning Cruise where we are focusing on Arts, Culture and Entertainment…so Friday is here, wow I so can’t believe not only is it Friday, but it’s also the end of the month another month has come and gone, so it out with May and in with June oh and pay day for many… So asked this question yesterday and will do the same today…how did you feel this morning when you woke up…were you happy, did you wana crawl back in bed mmm does that sound familiar. So ja if it’s you B-DAY or Anniversary on this cold, frosty and chilly autumns day I hope that you have a wonderful day and that you are spoilt by your family or loved ones coz you deserve it…or if you have just became a grandparent or a parent yourself then congratulations because those are all wonderful successes.

Moving onto today’s show we had all the usuals such as you’re Word of the Day, your SA Q&A, Information Guide, JobShop, and you’re Tip of the Day.

Word of the Day:

CRINGE – bend one’s body in fear or apprehension

Trivial Question:

Q: What is the name of the new Bafana Bafana coach?
A: Joe Santana

Tip of the Day:

Now earlier I spoke about struggling to wake up this morning or all other mornings in this past week. So here are those tips…

1. PREPARE YOUR SLEEP SPACE - Take a good look around at the space in which you are sleeping. Make sure you have a firm, comfortable mattress, good pillows, and clean, comfortable sheets. Use the right amount of blankets--if you have too few blankets, you will be cold at night and will not fall into a deep sleep. Make sure also that noise is not an issue in your sleep space.

2. TURN IT OFF - Stress and an inability to shut down is often a factor in causing sleepless nights. If you are having trouble sleeping, it is particularly important that you turn it off well before bedtime. This means stopping work several hours before bedtime, so that your brain can wind down and begin to shift gears from the pace of working at break-neck speed to relaxation. In addition to turning your brain off for the night, turn other things off as well.

3. GET INTO A SLEEP ROUTINE - Parents know that the best way to get a youngster to go to bed and fall asleep easily at night is to establish a routine. The ritual of taking a warm bath before bed, getting into pajamas, snuggling up together, and reading a bedtime story helps to signal to the child's brain that it is time to go to sleep and prepares the child for sleep.

4. LIMIT YOUR FOOD INTAKE BEFORE BED - As you lie down to sleep, acids in the stomach level out, making heartburn and indigestion more likely to occur. Also, your metabolism increases slightly to digest food, which can also raise your energy level. Stop eating at least three hours before your scheduled bedtime.

5. THINK PLEASANT THOUGHTS - The idea of counting sheep may seem silly and archaic, but it really works. The whole idea behind counting sheep is to get your mind to stop spinning in circles and to focus on something very boring and repetitive, such as picturing sheep gracefully and peacefully jumping over a fence, one after another..

Quote of the Day:

Henry David - It's not what you look at that matters, it's what you see

It’s time for me to love and leave you. You must have oh so super Friday and a fabulous weekend. Let’s chat again tomorrow…Much Love…Peace.

Today is the 29th of May 2008 and that of course means that it is the Thursday edition of the Morning Cruise…so Thursday is here, wow I so can’t believe that tomorrow another weekend is at our doorstep… So how did you feel this morning when you woke up…were you happy, did you wana crawl back in bed mmm if that sound familiar…So ja if it’s you B-DAY or Anniversary on this cold, frosty and chilly autumns day I hope that you have a wonderful day and that you are spoilt by your family or loved ones coz you deserve it…or if you have just became a grandparent or a parent yourself then congratulations because those are all wonderful successes.

Moving onto today’s show we had all the usuals such as you’re Word of the Day, your SA Q&A, Information Guide, JobShop, and you’re Tip of the Day.

We had an interview with:

Chris Lennard and he is from the Climate Systems Analysis Group, we’ll be taking about global warming and how it affects you and me. If you would like to know more visit http://www.csag.uct.ac.za/ or email Chris at lennard@csag.uct.ac.za

Word of the Day:

IRASCIBLE - prone to anger; easily provoked and hot tempered

Trivial Question:

Q: In what year did South Africa win soccer's African Cup of Nations?
A: 1996

Tip of the Day:

I spoke about going green. Now it’s very important to be aware of what you can do to help even in some small way the environment and it not only helps you, but your pocket too. So here are those tips…

1. Food - Grow your own. This isn’t a short term solution to going green, but it’s a good way to cut your food bill and your food miles in one foul swoop.

2. Cleaning - Green cleaning products are expensive. Next time you have to buy a cleaning spray, creams or bleach, instead buy yourself some cheap distilled vinegar, bicarbonate of soda (baking soda) and soda crystals and you’ll be able to tackle any cleaning task. You will be spending less, and reducing your exposure to nasty chemicals by changing your cleaning products to the good old-fashioned stuff.

3. Compost - Composting your food waste only applies if you have a garden, but it doesn’t have to be a big garden. You don’t even need a compost bin to compost.

4. Save Energy - Switch off lights when you leave the room, and switch off appliances/chargers when they’re not in use. Close your curtains as dusk to keep the heat in.

5. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle - Do you really need it? Could you do without it? It’s worth asking yourself this question every time you consider buying something. Reuse plastic bags as rubbish bags, or take them back to the shop and use them to carry your groceries home again. If you’re creative and can knit or crochet, make a reusable bag out of your plastic bags and use them for years.

6. Transport - Cycling is a very economical way to get around, no bus or train fares, no fuel to buy and no need to pay for parking. If you don’t have a bicycle. Cycling is good for the environment (no carbon emissions and no pollution) and good for you too, and it’s cheaper than going to a gym.

Quote of the Day:

George Bernard Shaw - If you can't get rid of the skeleton in your closet, you'd best teach it to dance

It’s time for me to love and leave you. You must have oh so super Thursday. Let’s chat again tomorrow…Much Love…Peace.

Word of the Day:

CALLOW – to act immature

Trivial Question:

Q: Name the stadium that will act as a venue for World Cup 2010 matches?
A: Greenpoint Stadium

Tip of the Day:

I spoke about keeping warm this winter, so if you have been down because of the weather or it being so cold then keep listening because I have your Tip of the Day on keeping warm this winter…

1. Dress appropriately - Wear thin layers of clothes rather than one thick layer. Choose clothes made with wool, cotton, or fleecy synthetic materials.

2. Stay active - Don’t stay sitting still for long periods. Spread chores through day and alternate between rest and activity. Exercise without taking risks in wet or icy weather.

3. Eat well - Eat at least one hot meal a day. Sip hot drinks regularly throughout day and beforbedtime. Keep a flask of hot drink by your bed should you wake up feeling cold.

4. Prepare your home - Stock up on provisions in case it is too cold to go to the shops. Seal gaps around windows and doors.

5. Keep one another warm - Finally, huddle up close to a loved warm so you can keep each other warm. That's how our ancestors survived the cold winters when they lived in caves. They would huddle close together near the fire to keep warm.

Samuel Johnson - The true measure of a man is how he treats someone who can do him absolutely no good

· "Take 5" Set aside 5 or 10 minutes to have "you" time. Try waking up a little bit earlier than the rest of the house and enjoy the quiet alone (or with a nice cup of tea).

· Get organized. No, not your clothing cupboards, but your mind. Buy yourself a notebook start a journal. Every night jot down happenings, thoughts and things accomplished that day, or even your frustrations. When your mind is "cleaned up," it is easier to relax and fall asleep.

· Take a bath. Put on some soft music, light a candle and enjoy a nice warm bubble bath. If you don't want music, you can always take a book or magazine with you.

Word of the Day:

HAUL – pull or drag with effort or force

Trivial Question:

Q: What is the name of the Western Cape town where you can go whale watching?
A: Hermanus

Tip of the Day:

I spoke about self confidence the importance of self confidence and I even asked the question Does your self-confidence need a boost? Well if so then this is the place that you should be its time for your tips with your Tip of the Day…

1. Do something you have been putting off. Like writing or calling a friend, cleaning the house, tidying the garden anything that involved you making a decision, then following through!

2. Do something you are good at. Examples? How about swimming, running, dancing, cooking, gardening, climbing, painting, writing… You will feel more competent, accomplished and capable afterwards, great antidotes to low self esteem! And while you're at it, seriously consider doing something like this at least once a week.

3. Stop thinking about yourself! I know this sounds strange, but low self esteem is often accompanied by too much focus on the self. Doing something that take up your time and holds your attention can quickly make you feel better.

4. Get seriously relaxed. If you are feeling low, anxious or lacking in confidence, the first thing to do is to stop thinking and relax properly. Some people do this by exercising, others by involving themselves in something that occupies their mind.

5. Remember all the things you have achieved. This can be difficult at first, but after a while, you'll develop a handy mental list of self-esteem boosting memories. And if you're thinking "But I've never achieved anything". Things like passing your driving test (despite being nervous), passing exams (despite doubting that you would), playing team sport, getting fit (even if you let it slip later), trying to help someone (even if it didn't work) and so on.
Quote of the Day:

Alice Meynell - Happiness is not a matter of events, it depends upon the tides of the mind

Word of the Day:

JAPE – a practical joke

Trivial Question:

Q: Which countries share borders with South Africa?
A: Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique

Tip of the Day:

I spoke about your deepest fears… Fear will keep people from accomplishing their purpose in life and from living to the full. Here are some tips for overcoming those limiting and harmful fears you may have in your own life.

1. Put a name on your fear. Know what it is by identifying it in detail.

2. Don't give up the quest to get rid of a fear. Sometimes fears can be tenacious. It can take a long time to completely overcome them, but the reward is worth it, so hang in there.

3. Don't obsess over fearful or troubling thoughts. This can be challenging in itself, but is very necessary.

4. Put the fear into perspective. Fears can rage like an inferno, when in reality they are little more than a candle flame. Don't let yourself waste too much energy on fearing the frightening item.

5. Don't be too hard on yourself if the old fear raises it's ugly head from time to time. Overcoming a fear takes persistence. Be patient with yourself. Let yourself be vulnerable to change.

6. Learn progressive relaxation. Analyze your fears and see just how irrational they are. List reasons why it is unnecessary to let yourself be paralyzed by this fear.

7. Learn to let go. Sometimes it is hard to let go of ideas and feelings, even when they are uncomfortable and damaging. They seem right, somehow. If you are to get rid of these unrealistic fears, however, you must let them go.

Quote of the Day:

James M. Barrie - Life is a long lesson in humility

Good Day! How are you doing? I hope that you had an absolutely fabulous on this Monday. Today is the 19th of May 2008 and that of course means that it is the Monday edition of the Morning Cruise. So it’s Monday and the thing I love about this day is that you can start a new, fresh start and turn over a new leaf…So ja if it’s you B-DAY or Anniversary on this cold, frosty and chilly autumns day I hope that you have a wonderful day and that you are spoilt by your family or loved ones coz you deserve it…or if you have just became a grandparent or a parent yourself then congratulations because those are all wonderful successes.

Moving onto today’s show we had all the usuals such as you’re Word of the Day, your SA Q&A, and you’re Tip of the Day.

Word of the Day:

PARAMOUNT – more important than anything else

Trivial Question:

Q: What the name of the fasts animal?
A: Cheetah

Tips of the Day:

Now earlier I spoke about how to be a good listener…

1. How many times have you been introduced to someone for the first time and not even one minute later you can not remember their name. This is an example of listening and not hearing. The key here is to repeat the name several times out loud in conversation in the next few minutes. This commits their name to your memory and people like to hear their own name so you are creating a pleasant feeling for them as well.

2. A good listener is interested in what the person they are talking to is saying. Even if it is the most boring subject in the world you can find something to be interested in about it. You do not have to mimic what they are saying to you, but paraphrasing every now and then will keep you involved in conversation and appear to be a good listener.

3. A good listener does not dominate the conversation. This does not mean that you allow the conversation to be dominated either. People that dominate a conversation are boring and do not care about anything except the sound of their voice. They are not good listeners.

4. A good listener can tune out distractions on concentrate on what the person they are talking to is saying. At a party this can be easier said than done, but a good listener has the ability to focus on what they hear being said to them. Concentration is a big part of being good at listening.

5. Part of being a good listener knows when to speak. Silence is part of every conversation and it is natural to not interrupt if the person you are talking to is not finished with the thought they are speaking about. In sales it is said that the person who speaks first loses and that is why all good salesmen will ask a question and then be quiet until it is answered.

Quote of the Day:

Harvey Fierstein - Never be bullied into silence. Never allow yourself to be made a victim. Accept no one's definition of your life; define yourself

It’s time for me to love and leave you. You must have oh so super Monday. Let’s chat again on tomorrow…Much Love…Peace.

A: Namaqualand

Tips of the Day:

I spoke about coping with costly groceries especially with the increase in high petrol, food clothing prices, because everything really went up.

1. Be a discount queen - If you're willing to put in the time and effort, you can make some major savings. It requires a bit of planning and collecting, but you are the one that will benefit at the end of the day.

2. Use meat for flavour, not bulk - cut costs significantly than eating large cuts of meat.

3. Invest in nutrition - Instead of buying sugar-coated cereals, white bread and chips, buy items like whole-grain bread and oatmeal.
4. Stock up on sales You know you're always going to use pasta, lightbulbs and toothpaste, so buy in bulk when it’s on sale.

5. Grow your own - Start your very own little garden by growing some crops. Basil and other herbs, hot peppers, eggplant and lettuce are some items that are very easy to grow and are never cheap at the grocer or farm stand, even when they are in season. Remember gardening is therapeutic too

Quote of the Day:

Henry Van Dyke - Be glad of life because it gives you the chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars

1. Realize Conflict Isn’t A Bad Thing - Conflict can be a good thing. It resolves issues and gets issues taken care of.

2. Run to confrontation - By confronting quickly you get the issue taken care of and you are able to move on in whatever way you decide.

3. Deal with conflict face to face - When most of us want to confront the person we are upset with, 99% of the time we do it through e-mail or sms. Do NOT get into email or sms exchanges with people. Set up a meeting and handle the situation.

4. Don’t take it personal

5. Don’t confront while still angry - try to give yourself at least 24 hours to allow yourself to calm down.

Quote of the Day:

Word of the Day:

CAVIL – to quibble or raise unimportant objections

Trivial Question:

Q: Name the president of the African National Congress?
A: Jacob Zuma

Tips of the Day:

I spoke about complaining like I said it’s easier to complain than actually do something…

Step1 - Be quiet; even when it is hard to do and you would rather not keep be quiet. This is the easiest way to stop complaining.

Step2 - Look at the sunny side of life. Think about how pretty it is outside, how much you have going for you and how lucky you are in so many ways.

Step3 - Give yourself a break. Take a walk or workout to get your body moving. Pet a cat or dog. Plant some flowers.

Step4 - Stop complaining if you are a big complainer. Decide right now today that you will take a week or two and not say anything at all unless it is positive, encouraging or uplifting.

Step5 - Make yourself feel better. Buy some new clothes, eat something special, get your hair styled or polish your car. Why complain when you have choices like these you can make?

Quote of the Day:

William James - Believe that life is worth living and your belief will help create the fact

Trivial Question:

Q: What is the name of Cape Town's famous botanical garden?
A: Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden

Tips of the Day:

I spoke about I said that I’m going to be speaking about anger and ways to deal with anger, I think that society at times does not allow us to deal with certain situations and with the daily pressures of life, now these tips might just as it helps you deal with difficult situations or periods in your life head on …

1. Allow time for anger to subside. Allow quiet time - allow for silence. You cannot solve problems when you are extremely emotional.

2. Refocus on what you want to see happen. Ask: What do I want the outcome of this situation to be?

3. Acknowledge the situation. Keep your voice calm. Use eye contact and slow but firm gestures. Let the person know you want to talk and to also listen to what he or she has to say.

4. Maintain respect. Don`t scold or humiliate. Treat the person in an adult manner even if their behavior appears childish.

5. Give the person time. Take the pressure off, allow cooling out time. Usually, the more upset a person is, the longer it will take to calm down. Take a time out until you are calm.

6. Strive to Forgive. The final step in maintaining anger-release is to truly forgive the person who wronged you as well as to truly forgive yourself.

Quote of the Day:

Mother Theresa – Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength lies

Moving onto today’s show we had all the usuals such as you’re Word of the Day, your SA Q&A, and you’re Tip of the Day.

Word of the Day:

DAUNT – to feel intimidated or apprehensive

Trivial Question:

Q: Where would you find Cape Town’s naval harbour?
A: Simonstown

Tips of the Day:

I spoke about how you can make 2008 the best year ever so if 2007 was not particularly your year then you can make up for that in 2008 …and don’t think because we are in May already that you can’t make it the best year ever…

1. One goal - If you have 10 goals, you’ll spread your focus thinly. But if you have one goal, you’ll be able to focus you energy and attention completely on that one goal. And that’s one of the secrets of success. Put your goal on your wall, on you computer desktop.

2. Create a new habit - Goals are achieved by habits. What habit can you develop this month to help achieve your One Goal for this year? Once you’ve identified that goal, you’ll need to commit yourself, hold yourself accountable to a group of people, and focus completely on that habit for a month.

3. Take action now - Take action today to make your goal come true. Take one action toward your One Goal every day, first thing in the day. The actions can be small things: making a list, making a call, doing some research

4. Simplify - if you take the time to simplify your life, in some way, this month, your year will be much better. When we have too much going on in our lives, it overwhelms us. It makes us ineffective.

5. Focus on happiness - What makes you happy? That should be the focus of your life. This year, make happiness be your priority.

6. Schedule time for you, and your loved ones - At least one thing on your short list of 4-5 things should be something you love to do. Spending time with yourself, doing something you love to do, will give you time for reflection.

7. Learn to focus - Each morning (or the night before), make a list of the 3 most important things that you want to accomplish today. Then start on the first one, first thing, instead of getting distracted by email or any of the other things that take away your attention.

Quote of the Day:

Tony Robbins – a real decision is measured by the fact that you’re taken a new action, if there’s no action, you haven’t truly decided

It’s time for me to love and leave you. You must have oh so super Monday. Let’s chat again on tomorrow…Much Love…Peace.

1. Allow yourself time and space to calm down if you had a recent argument and you're full of anger.

2. Swallow your pride and decide that you definitely want to mend the relationship. Think about the undesirable outcomes if you do not mend it.

3. Examine your own role in the feud. Did you do or say things because you felt hurt and wanted to lash back?

4. Try to understand the other person and why he or she has acted in a hurtful way. Fight the urge to judge the person.

5. Forgive and forget. Holding a grudge will only eat you up inside.
