Morning Cruise Update

Blog post 28/09/07.

Hey there. I hope you are doing good on this Friday afternoon and is ready for your weekend. I suppose the short working week was not as long as you thought it would be hey? It was just a blink of the eye and Friday’s here. Well, this is what we had done for the show.

10:35 Today we spoke about a show called Standing Ovation. It seems like a very interesting show if you want to see something different to what you normaly see. Here is a bit more information on the event. Not put together by me.
STANDING OVATION
Accomplished baritone Evan Schoombie is returning to Cape Town after a long stint overseas. Schoombie was a familiar face in musical theatre in the Mother
City during the nineties, performing the leading role in various productions such as Asjas-Passie, Jacques Brel is alive and well and living in Paris,
A touch of Webber and a taste of Rice and Song and Dance Variations (with the acclaimed Free Flight Dance Company).
At the height of his career he felt to give something back to the community which resulted in his leaving for overseas to be involved in various gospel
productions and theatre schools. Since returning to South Africa four years ago, he has produced and starred in two new productions that have played to
full houses across the nation: An evening with Brel & Gershwin and Andrew Lloyd Webber Tribute.
Schoombie will be performing at the Obz Café Theatre from 3 – 5 October as well as from 17 – 20 October in the production Standing Ovation. Schoombie’s
passionate performance is complemented by dexterous pianist Drini Malan-Botha. The show includes hits such as Madeleine, If you go away, The old folks
and Amsterdam by Brel as well as Music of the night, Magical Mr. Mistoffelees and Unexpected song by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Schoombie’s portrayal of Herman
van Veen’s Suzanne and Ik hou van jou are sure to cloud the eye, and a few of his original Afrikaans story-songs round off this beautiful bouquet.
Says Schoombie: ‘I believe that with more life experience one can better interpret the songs of passionate composers such as Brel and Webber. My voice has
also matured and I have discovered some wonderful talent in the Southern Cape, where I now reside, and have included some of these artists into my new
productions.

The cast is quite a big cast and took them quite some time to put together the play seeing that it is such a big production. Not only did the children work on this play, but the family was in on this as well, with helping with what ever they could. I do think it is well supporting. Don’t you think so? The play is starting tonight, so it is not to late for you to get some tickets. So, for more information or how you can book your tickets, you may make contact with them by using the number below. Annually, during this period, the Department of Education conducts social mobilisation campaigns in all educational institutions through life skills, HIV and AIDS activities. The decision to declare September as "Life Skills: HIV and AIDS Month", came with the realisation that the commemoration of World AIDS Day, on 1 December, falls at a time in the education calendar, when learners are either busy with end of the year examinations or have already gone on holiday.
The objectives of the campaign are to:
* strengthen awareness amongst learners, educators and communities on Life Skills, HIV and AIDS* encourage schools, communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and faith-based organisations (FBOs) to support the Department of Education in keeping children in schools, and * nurture a culture of documenting best practice and sharing ideas across schools.
The government’s Caring Together for Children (CT4T) campaign will guide this year’s Life Skills: HIV and AIDS activities.School-based activities will include a range of activities whose focus will be abstinence, HIV and teenage pregnancy prevention, substance abuse, care and support, child abuse and health relationships amongst learners. All these activities will take place as a build up to World AIDS Day on 1 December around the theme "A Nation Caring for Children". Lessons learnt and best practice across the system will be documented in order to be shared.
