Marital rape... a reality!
Findings of the respected 2008-2009 Kenya Demographic and Health Survey revealed disturbing figures showing that at least 14% of married women said their current husband or partner had forced them to have sex in the past year, while another 37% had been subjected to sexual violence at some point in their relationship.

A recent Gender-Based Violence Indicators study conducted by Gender Links and the Medical Research Council found that 7.8% of South African women had experienced intimate partner sexual violence in the past year, while 19% of women had experienced such violence in their lifetime.

12. Write Clear Goals
Most of the time that translates to actually write down your goals, you already have them clear in your mind. But take them out of your mind, put them in a trusted system and move on. Your mind works better when it knows what it has to do not when it spends time figuring what it has to do.
13. Exercise Satisfaction
Once you finished some task, reward yourself. Give yourself a prize. No need to be a huge one, but just enough to create the habit. Look forward to it while you’re working, wait for it, praise for it. In time you’ll become addicted to this fulfillment satisfaction and you won’t stop until you reach it.
14. Accept Failure
As part of the game. Failure, like success, is just a result of your actions, nothing more. One of the biggest motivation enemies is fear of failure. Fear that your outcome will turn bad. Accept it. It may turn bad, but that doesn’t mean you have to stop doing what you’re doing. Give your best and hope for the best.
15. Use Affirmations
Like writing down your intentions, your goals, your current status. Affirmations are a very powerful tool, hugely underrated. People find it awkward to write self-directed messages and read them out loud. News flash: you’re doing this all the time, unconsciously. So why not doing it consciously? Start with a morning phrase.
16. Play Games
Impersonate people. Imitate animals. Pretend you’re Sindbad the Sailor. Playing challenging games will relax your mind and at the same time will gather more resources from secret sources. A good motivation is always blended with joy. You can start with a simple game like how to get from a to b in 5 random steps.
17. Say “No”
Say “no” to distractions, to trolls, to depression. Exercising “no”’s is liberating. Too often too many commitments are making your life a continuous chore. Limit your promises and only get into things you really want to finish. Once you do that, go to a mirror, smile and start to politely exercise your “no”‘s.
18. Look For Positive People
Sadness, whining and complaining doesn’t play well with motivation. On the contrary. But positive, optimistic, energetic people will always shift your vibration in the right direction. Search them, find them and become their friend. Sometimes all you need to get motivated is to be surrounded by shiny happy people.

HipHopKop, a search for an Afrikaans Hip Hop star, in a similar format to that of Idols, but based largely online. The project serves a number of purposes, including the upliftment of less privileged communities, and allowing Afrikaans hip hop culture to be reclaimed by the original pioneers of a genre that has now been appropriated by the likes of Jack Parow and Die Antwoord.

The initiative is the brainchild of acclaimed South African music producer, Deon Maas, whose aim was to provide a viable platform for coloured hip hop artists in communities across the country. It is also supported strongly by Christo van der Rheede, who heads up the Society for the Preservation of Afrikaans, and performing artist Jack Parow, one of the breakout stars of the genre.

The first leg of the competition culminates in a spectacular show, taking place as part of the Suidoosterfees Festival at the ArtsCape on Friday 28 January 2011 at 19h00, and will feature Jack Parow and DJ Ready D performing alongside the six HipHopKop finalists selected at

Man Stabs 4, Killing 1, After Fart Criticism
A Bristol, Connecticut man is behind bars after a stabbing rampage that left one dead and three others injured at a party on Saturday night. According to the Hartford Courant, Marc Higgins "told investigators he became enraged because people were criticizing him for passing gas, police said... [He] stormed out of the party, came back armed with three knives and started stabbing people indiscriminately, according to court documents released Monday." Higgins, 21, was reportedly "chastised...for being flatulent" by another person at the party, Stacy Buccheri.

Gender Hub Comedy Wednesday was inspired by the all-female comedy quartet Cracks Only . The show heads for the Baxter for regular end-of-month gigs. The special guest at the first performance will be the iconic Evita Bezuidenhout, South Africa's Most Famous White Woman.

The Cracks, consisting of award-winning actress Anthea Thompson, comedy stars Shimmy Isaacs and Anne Hirsch, and veteran columnist Marianne Thamm, caused a minor sensation with their show Cracks and the City, directed by Alan Committie, which played at the Baxter in July 2010.

(Reuters Health) - There might be trouble brewing behind the glassy eyes of kids who spend too much time and energy on video games, according to a controversial new study.

In the 2-year study of more than 3,000 school children in Singapore, researchers found nearly one in ten were video game "addicts," and most were stuck with the problem.
While these kids were more likely to have behavioral problems to begin with, excessive gaming appeared to cause additional mental woes.

For Art – C Friday we showcased a proudly South African show taking place at On Broadway ( in long street Cape Town called, “NOT that idols show”. It’s not ‘Idols’ but it is LIVE! It’s Cape Town’s best and worst amateur talent and the people, get to be Simon Cowell!

Long before Idols came along, the public has been fascinated with watching rough diamonds come off the street and sing their hearts out in the hope of showbiz stardom. It’s exciting, compelling, sad, funny and often moving and it’s a formula that never fails. Amateur night at the Apollo has been running in Harlem, New York, for decades and has unearthed several superstars, including The Jackson 5 (winners by audience vote, August 13th, 1967), James Brown and Stevie Wonder. We think we can do what Idols doesn’t seem to be able to do…unearth the next Brenda Fassie or Jonathan Butler.

What’s more the overall winner will receive a video and recording contract. Michael Duffet's Face 2 Face Films - one of Carte Blanche's main producers will be shooting the video and Patric van Blerk's Cape Town Sound Studios will be recording the single. The winner, along with some of the best runners up, will feature in On Broadway's 2011 Year End Show.

Today MC showcased the Bridging Year Programme for matriculants

Today’s featured interview showcased one of the South African Education and Environment Project (SAEP), Bridging Year Programme. Bridging Year Programme helps matriculants (who passed but would like to improve their results) to register to re-write their matric exams (with the aim of helping them to improve their grades in order to gain entrance into higher/tertiary education). Despite the serious shortage of programmes of this nature in the country, these programmes are absolutely crucial given the skewed nature of our education system.
The Bridging Year programme aims to bridge the gap between high school and university (as well as between privileged and underprivileged schools) and involves providing promising township high school matriculants the tools they need to adequately prepare for, obtain entrance into, and succeed in tertiary institutions, learnerships, or productive employment. The programme is aimed at holistic development through a wide range of experiences and exposure to diverse people and ideas. To find out more visit

It is believed that men are in fact more sensitive than women, they just good at hiding it. INTERESTING…

Men are mostly emotionless: This is just an ignorant myth. I have no idea who would even consider this to be true. Everybody has emotions whether they are good or bad. Guys just tend to keep quiet about their emotions more often. It makes things easier a lot of the time because it prevents confrontation which is a waste of time in most cases. This allows things that are productive or more desirable to be done. I personally am very emotional and I don’t hide it. When I am pissed, I come right out and say it. When I am happy I let it be known. I think that is makes things clear and simple so that people know what I like or dislike but a lot of men see it differently.


Shaldon Uithaler a facilitator of Molo Songololo’s Young Men forum. The forum provides a platform for dialogue, empowerment and action amongst young men to prevent delinquency, abuse, violence and crime.

I think it’s important that we all should become proactive in learning about each other. For people to be ignorant and proud of it in today’s day and age is, to me, unacceptable. It’s time to break the stereotypes and kill myths that we have about one another. STOP THE HATE! It’s not a male or female thing it’s a HUMAN BEING thing.

Live your life out loud
Live your life on purpose. Not on “default.” Be Proactive. Make conscious and deliberate choices. When you don’t choose, circumstances choose for you and you are never leading: you are following or catching up—or worse, living in “default” mode.
2. Utilize your full potential. Give what you’re doing your best and fullest attention. Be here now. Even if you’re not where you want to be, giving it half your effort doesn’t move you forward. Master what you have at hand, for the sake of mastering it and something will shift.
3. Overcome your fear. Get out of your comfort zone. Find out you have a pulse. Let something give you butterflies in your stomach. This is how you know you’re alive—how you grow into something new. Every fear overcome is a freedom gained. Don’t know how to overcome fear? Do the thing you’re afraid of. Cross them off the list. Make it a game. Pretty soon, you will be invincible.
4. Discover a new talent. One of my favorite quotes by Martha Grimes is, “We don’t know who we are until we see what we can do.” But we don’t find this out until we try something new. Learn a new instrument, take an art class, play with a digital camera, sign up for a salsa class, take up cooking, plant a garden, join toastmasters, pick up a needle and thread, try mountain climbing, go scuba diving, camping or kayaking. Find something that interests you and explore it. You never know what will come out of it.
5. Honor your word. When you strip everything else away, your word is all you’ve got. Do what you say you’re going to do. By honoring your word, you honor yourself. And it doesn’t feel good when you don’t. So, make it a habit. Value your integrity and keep your promises. It’s a good life practice. It’s a good business practice.
6. Create a new habit or break an old one. Who has dominion over your life—you or your habits? Make it a game. How many things can you get under your control? How many bad habits can you convert? There is a great sense of empowerment when you feel you are in charge of your life. This helps you get there.
Pay a stranger a compliment. Not only does it make someone else feel good, but it makes you feel good to compliment someone else. All of the sudden the world is small and the stranger next to us becomes our friend and we recognize that we’re all in this together.
8. Take yourself out on a date. Treat yourself. Bring a book. Bring something you’re working on. Bring a journal and use it to write up all the amazing qualities that you want in a partner or a friendship when it comes your way. Find somewhere that has music or wireless and plant yourself there. Have a meal, enjoy it. Treat yourself. You deserve it. Living out loud is playing out loud whether you have someone to join you or not. And you never know who you might meet or strike up a conversation with.
9. Take 100% responsibility for your life. If things aren’t working out in your favor, take note and ask yourself what your part in it is. Being a victim is passé, boring. There is no power in blaming other people. Don’t wait for other people to change. When you change, your world will follow suit.
10. Live in the question. There is nothing you cannot be, do or have. So do not impose limitations on yourself. Instead of saying you can’t get there, ask “How can I get there?” Live in the affirmation of possibility rather than the declaration of negativity. There is always a way, and it is being presented consistently, but you have to live in the question to be on the lookout for the answer.
11. Make more decisions for yourself. There is great power in making a decision. It’s a declaration. You don’t know what you want? Then look at what you don’t want and work backwards. I bet you do know what you want; you just haven’t been in the habit of asking yourself. Hey. That’s a new habit to change!

Inspiration of the day
Brains are useful things, they help you do a lot of incredibly cool stuff. But sometimes they just won’t shut up. A cluttered mind can keep you from achieving your potential in most situations. A mind is most effective at zero.
Here are 16 simple ways to clear your mind
1.Sit in silence.
Place a pillow on the ground somewhere in a private place, turn off the lights, and just sit for 15 minutes. Listen to the chatter in your mind, but don’t try to interact with it. Just observe your thought patterns, eventually they will begin to subside. Try sitting for a longer time when you can.
2.Take a walk. Meditation while walking is one of the best ways to calm a mind. There’s something about the repetition of moving one foot in front of the next that is so relaxing. Go for a 30-minute walk with no destination. You will return with a calmed mind.
3.Write it down. Take your thought processes out of your pre-frontal cortex and onto the page. Open a notebook, take a pen, and begin engaging in writing flow until you find that the waves of thought have subsided.
4.Laugh it off. Sometimes life is just silly, so have a sense of humor and embrace the insanity. Laugh at the thoughts in your head, with any luck you’ll recognize by laughing at the thoughts in your head, you’ll be able to realize just how silly they are and your mind will relax.
5.Take deep breathes. This is one of my all time favorites, I do this regularly before and after any situation that may happen. Take 10 deep inhales and exhales. Make each breath slow and deliberate. Your mind will be quiet by the end of the tenth exhale.
6.Move slower. Make every action deliberate. Like a zen master makes tea, you will do everything that you need to do slower. Notice every motion you make from start to finish, every action from beginning to end. This will focus your mind on the task at hand, and quiet the internal babbling.
7.Talk to someone. Sometimes the best way to quiet a mind is to talk over your thinking with another person. Don’t vent your frustrations to them, because that’s just going to lead to another frustrated person. Simply tell them what is going on in your mind, and maybe both of you can come up with a solution.
8.Throw away your to-do list. Once in awhile the lists get too long, they become overwhelming. There are so many steps or actions that you need to take in day-to-day life that you may never see the end. Why not just abandon whatever it is you’re doing? One of the best skills that anyone can master is the ability to learn how to quit, when the time is right to do so. Take this moment to quit, and your mind won’t have anything to worry about anymore.
9.Lie on the floor. Nothing can beat a good lie on the floor. Wherever you are, just stop doing what you’re doing and fall backwards. Though, be sure to take look behind you to make sure there is nothing you will hit. Then stay on the floor for 15 minutes and just breathe.

Having a well planned out and slow paced morning helps me start the day right. I am somewhat of a work-a-holic at heart. Waking up early and taking planned steps one step at a time helps me start my day out right!
9. Start A Blog. Blogging can be a great way to make income, but besides that its a great way to release. I love writing on my blog and expressing my opinions. Blogging helps me focus, and the joy of sharing helpful information with others in need is very rewarding.

10. Pay Yourself First. We have to pay ourselves first if we ever plan on getting ahead. Before you pay any bills or spend any type of money each pay period set aside a certain amount for savings. Continue to do this, and reinvest that money in wise investments down the road.
11. Be Grateful. We as humans tend to think about everything we don't have instead of everything we do have. We live in the most technological advanced time in the history of the world. So many of us have things we take for granted. Start your days off right, and be grateful that your alive and taking that first step after you wake up!
12. Commit to Self Improvement Daily. This is the most important thing I have done to change my life. The study of self improvement has created the life I am now living. A simple hour of a good book or blog daily can do wonders for your self confidence, focus, ambition, and the list continues on and on.
13. Write A Passion Statement. What are you on this earth to do? Each and everyone of us are unique, we all have specific goals and dreams. You are special in your own way, and you have skills that can help change the world.
14. Make Today Count. Success in life can be predicted by ones daily agenda. Are you taking the steps necessary every day to accomplish your goals? Make the most out of each and every day!
15. Learn A New Language. Learning a new language is a great tool to put your mind to work. You will forever be enriched by learning a new language and culture. Not only that you will also be more marketable when it comes to jobs and business.
16. Exercise. You don't have to break any world records or anything. Just make sure you exercise consistently. You will feel better and look better. Exercising as always been a great tool for me to release stress as well.
17. Go Have Some Fun. Go out for a night and meet some new people. Spice up your life. Is there anything you've been wanting to do but have been putting off? Go for it and have the time of your life!
18. Make Peace With Old Enemies. Do you have any old friends or family members you've been fighting with over the years. It's time to let that go, don't carry the burden any longer. Be the first to apologize, even if your not in the wrong and move on!
19. Smile More. My first job was at a kiosk in a mall. At that time people always seemed to be upset when coming to purchase things. I found that if it looked like someone was having a hard day that if I gave them a big smile and was polite their emotions could change dramatically. Smile more, it is a great remedy for hard times!
20. Join A New Group. Meet some new people and join a new group. It could be a fitness group, game group, whatever it is. Go out and interact with new people and build new friendships!
21. Meditate Daily. Meditation is one of the best ways to refocus and enlighten your mind.
22. Stop Arguing Win or lose, give up arguing. Life is to short to spend time on all the trivial matters that we often do. Instead let go and compromise, learn to work with people instead of against them.
23. Create Solid Specific Goals. Specific goals are integral to your success. It is a proven fact that people who have written goals on average achieve more than those who do not.
24. Fix Something. Is there something that you've been meaning to fix, but just haven't had the time? Well now its time to make time. It is of my opinion that if you don't fix the small things when they are small they will eventually turn into big things!
25. Take Responsibility. You are the creator of your life. The experiences you have are merely a representation of your perspective. Change your perspective and focus on the good things in bad situations. Become an inverse paranoid. See the world as working to help you instead of against you. You are the only one responsible for the way you are living now, either except it or don't. Either way you decided.

Some Sun Exposure Important for Bone Health
Over the years, people have become increasingly cautious about exposing their skin to the sun because of concerns about developing cancer. However, continuously slathering on sunscreen and shielding oneself from the sun can lead to vitamin D deficiency. Vitamin D is a vital nutrient that helps keep bones strong, prevents rickets, and protects against conditions like osteoporosis. UK experts are therefore recommending that, during summers, people go out in the sun without wearing sunscreen for 10 to 15 minutes several times a week.

How to worry well
1. Distract yourself. When the urge to obsess about your problems (or potential problems) kicks in, force yourself to stop by saying “stop” out loud, if need be. Do something pleasant and engrossing instead: read, sing, exercise with a friend, indulge in a hobby or watch a funny DVD. Doing something that takes your thoughts off your worries will break the grip that negative thinking has on your mind and help you gain a fresh perspective, explains Nolen-Hoeksema.
2. Set worry hours. Don’t worry spontaneously - establish a designated worry time, perhaps in the late afternoon or early evening (but not before bed). When the time arrives, write out a list of your primary worries, suggests Dr Robert Leahy, director of the American Institute for Cognitive Therapy in New York and author of The Worry Cure. For each item, also indicate what you gain and what you lose by worrying about it. Spend 20 minutes focusing on your worries, then tell yourself you’re done for the day.
3. Give your worries a reality check Ask yourself: How much will this issue matter in a week, a month, a year or five years? Is the situation really as dire or urgent as you’re telling yourself? “Most worries have an element of nearsightedness,” says Leahy. But taking a step back, considering the big picture and challenging the way you’re thinking can completely change your sense of what’s happening. By assessing the probability versus the possibility of your worst worries coming true, you’ll realise that no, you’re not destined to become homeless just because your investments lost some value. Then, you can cross that worry off your list.
4. Swing into problem-solving mode. With issues that have potential long-term consequences, write down exactly what you think the problem is or how the situation needs to change, advises Nolen-Hoeksema. Next, rephrase the issue to reflect the positive outcome you desire; for example, instead of worrying about getting laid off, ask yourself how you can make yourself indispensable to your company. Then get the facts about your situation (how is your company doing financially? how vulnerable are you?), brainstorm with a trusted friend what you can do to move toward your goal (maybe talk to your supervisor about how to solidify your position or volunteer for extra projects that need to be done), then formulate a concrete plan of action and give it a try. If it doesn’t work, revise your approach.
5. Know when to let go. When you’re dealing with an uncertain situation that you really have no control over, sometimes the best thing you can do is to simply let go. Imagine your worries being pumped into a helium-filled balloon, then release it into the air and watch it fly away. Take a shower and wash that worry right out of your head. Or write your worry on a piece of paper, crumple it up and throw it in the trash. Then set your sights on what you can control. If you’re worried about the results of some pending medical test, for example, focus your attention on seeing friends you adore or finishing a project at work.
Why waste your time and energy engaging in unhealthy, unproductive worry? Learn to worry well instead! “Your mind can only be in one place at a time,” explains Leahy, “so put it in a place that pays off.”

Life coach Nicholai Andler from He joined me this morning to set the record straight.
It is said that action proceeds motivation and not the other way around. Often when it comes to goals be it losing weight, quitting smoking we tend to look for motivation first then expect to do.

According to life coach Nicholai Andler our goals wither away after a week because our reasons do not correlate with what we want. Do you say, “I need to”, “I must” or “I want to”. It may sound similar says Andler but if it’s not what you ‘want to’ do you probably won’t.
We also discussed how “our” goals are brought about by others. Your spouse complains about how your drinking is unlady like or the media makes you feel your size is less than perfect. This creates this need for change.

Lastly Shelia Afari and Cameron Arendse from Design For Style stepped into the studios. DFS was conceptualised to showcase young up & coming designers from a variety of backgrounds with a vision to break into the fashion industry.

DFS is fashion platform that showcases emerging designers through fashion shows. The fashion shows currently take place in Cape Town, but as of March 2011, our shows will also happen in Johannesburg. All our fashion shows are creatively produced to accommodate each designer's unique vision.

The DFS platform is supported by intermediatory events such as workshops that are aimed to assist the designers we showcase as well as other budding designers, to be more sustainable and to learn industry traits such as being commercially viable.

Retail space is made available in Collage, Long Street, Cape Town, where we stock some of the designers that we have showcased. The Collage store will officially open at the end of January.
