TIP OF THE DAY
Important Tips for Better Entertainment Events

Always request that the wait staff not clear dishes during an after dinner show. It is a major disturbance for your guests.

Keep things moving along throughout the event. Often people are done eating and just sitting and waiting for things to happen. Dessert shows can work great to keep the evening moving along.
Try not to have a break between your meal, program, and entertainment. Keep things moving and flowing. Once people get up and start moving and talking it is hard to get them sitting back down and refocused. Things should be ready to go and the act all set so they can jump on stage and keep the evening flowing.

Make sure you have a strong MC. Try to have someone who is energetic and articulate do the MC work for your event. It makes the night a whole lot better for your guests.

Allow enough time and space for acts to set up and perform properly. Professional entertainers will want to arrive and set up and do sound and light checks prior to your guests ever entering the room.

Even if you have a committee selecting entertainment, have only one person act as a contact for the entertainer prior to the day of performance and the night of the performance. Things tend to get mixed up when three different people are telling the performer three different things.
Lastly, choose the right entertainment!

OMNISCIENT TUESDAY
By Denisia Adams
Good day to you how you feeling? Better be good if you alive this day you’ve got reason to not to be. Check out some of the features had on the show:

WORD(s) OF THE DAY
Destitute:
extremely poor and lacking the means to provide for oneself.

S.A TRIVIA QUESTION
What is by far South Africa’s biggest neighbour?

A – the desert B – Botswana C – the Ocean

Answer:
By far South Africa's biggest neighbour is the ocean - or two oceans, which meet at the southwestern corner. Its territory includes Marion and Prince Edward Islands, nearly 2 000km from Cape Town in the Atlantic Ocean.

DID YOU KNOW
In 1894, Lord Kelvin predicted that radio had no future; he also predicted that heavier-than-air flying machines were possible. Also did you know that the one place where an American flag files all day, never goes up or comes down and does not get saluted, is the moon.

TIP OF THE DAY
Learn how to navigate through minefields of misinformation and uncover the truth.
Honesty may be the best policy, but it's not a policy people follow very often. In fact, according to a study, people lie in roughly 25 percent of their daily interactions.
How can you detect dishonesty in relationships, friendships, and business?

Inconsistencies: One of the easiest, and most reliable, ways to catch a liar is to identify inconsistencies in their story--details that just don't jive with common sense, prevailing logic, or societal norms. For example, if your date claims he's as rich as Bill Gates but drives a Hyundai, you can bet he's telling a tall tale.

Eye contact: When it comes to lying, the eyes can be a dead giveaway. Generally, liars avoid eye contact, but if you're dealing with a seasoned fabricator, he or she might stare excessively. In addition, most people's pupils dilate when they're lying because their adrenalin rises.

Contradictions: As they weave their tales of deceit, liars typically forget a few details along the way and reveal some telling contradictions. For example, if a friend backed out of your weekend plans because she supposedly had a life-threatening illness and later described the weekend as "wonderful," consider it a red flag.
Changes in body language: Look for signs in the suspected liar's face that they're hiding, suppressing, or faking a spontaneous expression. And beware of those who touch their lower faces often, scratch their noses, or hide the hands behind their backs or in their pockets.

Shifting vocal patterns: According to experts, inconsistent vocal patterns are extremely common among dishonest people. In the midst of a lie, the pitch and tone of their voices may change on a dime, and the rate of their speech may suddenly slow down or get quicker.

Changing the subject: When trying to detect deception, watch out for this common tactic. For example, if you ask your boss about that raise she promised six months ago, and she starts to talk about the weather, you have to question her motives.
Inappropriate emotion: Beware of exaggerated emotion, anger, and defensiveness.

WE ALSO FEATURED:
An interview with Ginny Swart who spoke to us about the Short Story Competition currently being held. This is a competition for any aspiring writers. To find out more check http://www.sawriterscollege.co.za/

TIP OF THE DAY
10 Ways to Stop Worrying

Everyone worries from time to time, but too much worrying can affect your health.
Did you forget to turn off the lights? Weren't you supposed to call your friend? What ever happened to your high-school yearbook? For many of us, worrying just seems like a natural part of our daily lives. But experts warn that too much worrying can affect your emotional and physical health. Here, 10 ways to stop stressing.

1. Just say no. It's easy to overextend yourself. The next time you get called to action, explain that while you would like to help, you don't have the time.

2. Don't be a hero. Hand over some of your responsibilities. Decide which tasks are the least important or which would be best to pass on to someone else.

3. Take a break. Take 20 minutes a day to just sit and breathe. Listen to soothing music, or sit in a quiet place. If meditation isn't for you, find another calming activity. Stay away from competitive sports or anything that could add more stress to your day.

4. Write it down. Writing down your worries in statements that start with I am worried about helps you pinpoint the source of your anxiety. What if statements cause more stress, while I am worried statements force you to decide whether your fear is rational.

5. Take it one step at a time. Keep your mind on the task at hand, and try not to think about the things that you have to do later.

6. Sharing is caring. Confide in a friend. Expressing your worries aloud can help, and other people may think of solutions that you couldn't.

7. Face your fear. Worries are essentially fears, according to Mind. The best way to manage them is to define your fears and then face them head-on.

8. Like mom said, eat your breakfast. Eating right can reduce the effects of stress. Poor eating habits, including having too much caffeine and sugar, can lead to feeling jittery and agitated. It also makes it difficult to concentrate on the task at hand.

9. Timing is everything. Don't procrastinate. Leave enough time to get to the airport even if you were to encounter a traffic detour.

10. Kick the habit. Though some people feel like a cigarette calms them down, the need to have that cigarette can cause stress and affect your mood. This is true for other addictions as well.

S.A TRIVIA QUESTION
Name the South African band who did a cover version of the Foundations song, Build Me Up Buttercup?
A – Mean Mr Mustard B – Tweek C - Malaika

Answer: A – Mean Mr Mustard

Here’s some info:
Among the many South African artists that come and go over the years – most succeeding in creating a spark, but fizzling out just as quickly – MEAN MR MUSTARD is a name that continues to burn brightly.

Their third album entitled “Secret Places”, released in October 2002, took a slightly new musical direction. The songs are more guitar-based with a ‘live’ edge. Although not a live recording, the album gives MMM fans the intense sound and feeling of the live stage performances for which the band has become so-well-known.The first single of this album , “Secret Places”, reached no. 1 of 5FM Music and the second single, a cover of '‘Build Me Up Buttercup” has literally become a “National Anthem” in South Africa and still riding high on play-lists on all national and regional stations. Other standout tracks are, “Gonna Be Alright”, ”Higher” and “Waterfalls”.

DID YOU KNOW
The longest movie in the world according to Guinness World Records is The Cure for Insomnia, directed by John Henry Timmis IV. Released in 1987, the running time is 5220 minutes (87 hours) and has no plot. Instead, it consists of poet L. D. Groban reciting his 4,080-page poem "A Cure for Insomnia" over the course of three and a half days. The movie is inter-spliced with clips from porno and heavy metal music videos.
Also did you know Jack Mercer was the voice of Popeye the Sailor for 45 years.

TIP OF THE DAY
Hints and Tips when using a Microphone
People generally see a microphone as a tool to hide behind, or as an absolute necessity to make their speech a success. Should the speech be a disaster, it is normally the microphone’s fault, or the fault of “that sound guy”.
The truth is that a microphone is one of the most valuable tools to have in order to accomplish a flaunt-less speech, if used correctly.

Holding the microphone.
Don’t “choke” a microphone, it will scream!!! This normally happens when people grasp a microphone by the top part of the body or too close to the mesh part where they need to talk into.
Remember that a microphone is most effective around 3-5 cm away from your mouth. So don’t be afraid to hold it close to your mouth.

Hold your microphone upright. You all witnessed this before… The speech starts and you can hear everything… but as the speech progresses, the speaker let’s the microphone drop lower and lower from his mouth. The same goes for microphones that are fitted on a microphone stand. People tend to stand in front of the stand, but after a while, either move away from the microphone stand, or talk in a different direction.

Whether you are holding a microphone in your hand, or if it is fitted into a microphone stand, always remember Golden Rule Number 2:As long as you can see the base of the microphone (bottom part) over the rest of the microphone, you know that you are talking INTO it, which is what we want!! Try it with an ordinary pen, and you will see what we mean.

General Rules and Reminders:
When talking on a microphone, a lot of people ask if it is loud enough or if the audience can hear them. Answer is very simple, and this is Golden Rule Number 3:Speak loud enough to hear yourself over the speakers.

Never point a microphone in the direction of a speaker. It will cause that howling noise (feedback)

Never put a microphone down without switching it off.

Never clap your hands while holding a microphone.

Make sure that everyone knows where the switch is located on the microphone.

Microphones are not toys, so please keep them away from children.

TIP OF THE DAY
How to Stand Up for Yourself

Do people walk all over you? Follow these tips to start becoming more assertive.
We've all met those people who can't stand up for themselves. Even when they know they should be assertive, they can't express their opinions.

A growing body of research suggests that being too passive can reduce your ability to get what you want on the job, in relationships, and in life. What's more, it can impact your health.

Some experts believe that passive people are more likely to be passive smokers, which puts them at greater risk for heart disease, cancer, and other serious health conditions and because passive people have difficulty saying no, they often feel overwhelmed and anxious. The resulting stress can lead to low self-esteem or even depression.
Fortunately, it is possible to stop being a doormat and start asserting yourself.

Specify
Be specific about what you want, describe things you feel are a problem, and request a change of action. Explain that there will be consequences if the change is not made, and be prepared to follow through on them.

For example, if you're offended by the language someone is using at your workplace, tell him or her which words you find offensive and request that they stop. Explain to your coworker that if he or she doesn't stop, you'll file a formal complaint with your employer.

Tone
Remember, you don't have to raise your voice to be assertive--instead, try to keep it steady and at a reasonable volume. It also helps if you know what you want to say before you say it, so you may find that it's helpful to practice in front of a mirror.

Eye contact
When trying to be assertive, it's always important to maintain direct eye contact with the person you're talking to. Eye contact demonstrates that you're not afraid or intimated by the other person and forces him or her to look at you and pay attention to what you're saying.

Posture
Just like eye contact, your posture speaks volumes about your communication style. To establish assertiveness, sit a comfortable distance away from the person you're talking to. Talk with your hands to emphasize important points, but be mindful of what those gestures may say about what you're thinking. For example, pointing at someone may indicate that you're blaming that person, while throwing your hands up in the air may suggest that you're giving up.

Computers, cell phones, and BlackBerrys are all designed to make you more efficient, but according to some experts, an overreliance on these gadgets could have the opposite effect.

Discovering a foreign language, learning how to play an instrument, or reading a new book are great ways to improve your cognitive function. Plus, these kinds of activities challenge your mind to think beyond your usual day-to-day routine. Other IQ-enhancing pastimes include crossword puzzles and Sudoku.

6. Listen to music.
Researchers gave two groups of college students IQ tests. One group, who listened to Mozart's Sonata for Two Pianos in D-major beforehand, scored seven to 10 points higher than the control group, who listened to nothing.

7. Play games.
Certain competitive activities, like chess, pool, poker, and some video games, can improve your ability to think strategically. According to experts, these pastimes may also sharpen your math and logic skills.

TIP OF THE DAY (best of last week)
Are You Too Nice For Your Own Good?
10 Telltale Signs That You're Too Nice

1. You constantly put the needs of others before your own.

2. You never ask people to make sacrifices for you, but you always make sacrifices for them.

3. Conflict makes you very uncomfortable, and you do whatever it takes to avoid it.

4. You don't believe that it's possible to be nice and assertive at the same time.

5. If you have to make a choice between disappointing another person or yourself, you always choose to disappoint yourself.

6. You have trouble saying no, even when you know you should.

7. Delegating is not your strength because you're afraid you'll come across as bossy.

8. You find it tough to speak up and share your opinions.

9. You have a hard time standing up to people who put you down.

10. If you attempt to voice your opinion, you always feel guilty afterward.Does any of this sound familiar? If so, there's a good chance you're too nice for your own goodand it's time to start making some changes.

Five Ways to Break the "Nice" Cycle
1.Believe in yourself. If you don't have self-confidence, other people will notice, and they may start walking all over you. After all, how do you expect others to respect you when you keep second-guessing yourself? So make a conscious effort to hold your head high at all times

2. Stand up for yourself. Your opinions and beliefs are just as valid as the next person's, so don't be afraid to speak your mind. Remember, you will gain respect from others by standing firm.

3. Don't be afraid to ask for what you want. People who are not naturally assertive often find it hard to ask anything of others. However, if your requests are reasonable, you may be surprised at how willing people are to help. Practice asking for little things, and don't feel guilty about it.

4. Practice saying no. Remember, it's okay to say no to things you don't want to do. If something makes you uncomfortable or you simply don't have the time, try saying, "I'm sorry, but I can't."

5. Learn to accept compliments. You may feel awkward when people lavish you with praise, but accepting their kind words is the first step toward building stronger self-esteem. So the next time someone pays you a compliment, simply smile and say thank you without minimizing or dismissing it. Who knows? In time, you may even learn to enjoy it.

QUOTE OF THE DAY (best of last week)
Johnnetta Betsch Cole:
If folks can learn to be racist, then they can learn to be anti racist. If being sexist ain't genetic, then, people can learn about gender equality.

Step4: Accept the facts as they are, but exaggerate or distort those facts to draw attention to them.

Step5: Make up games to make the day-to-day aspects of your life more entertaining. For example, figure out why the people in the other cars look the way they do when you're stuck in a traffic jam.

Step6: Bring to life characters and stories that people can relate to and recognize in their own lives. Remember that your life is the subject matter you know best, so use it.

Step7: Read your audience and time your jokes correctly. Use pauses to allow the audience - your co-workers, your spouse or whomever - to absorb the humor.

Step8: Have confidence in your observations and stories.

Step9: Relax and enjoy life.

TIP OF THE DAY
How to Bounce Back From Embarrassment

Understand your embarrassment.
Mark Twain once wrote, "Man is the only animal that blushes. Or needs to." If we weren't aware of our actions, we wouldn't feel the need to be embarrassed. To better understand your situation, start by determining exactly what you did and figuring out whether the situation could have been avoided.

Keep a sense of perspective.
When something embarrassing happens, people tend to think that everyone witnessed what we did, which is a self-centered view. In reality, maybe no one saw it or only a few people did. Take some time to think about the situation instead of reacting immediately.

React appropriately or use humor.
Remember that whatever you've done, chances are, it's been done before. Overreacting or trying to cover up your embarrassment can make matters worse, and sometimes humor can make the situation less awkward.

Change your behavior.
If the circumstances of the embarrassment were within your control and you've hurt other people, you'll need to think about becoming more sensitive to what your actions and words mean. By becoming more sensitive to your surroundings, you'll reduce the risk of embarrassing situations in the future.

And as a man would you go to such lengths to understand and support your wife or girlfriend.

Venezuela received its independence the 5 July 1811 (from Spain).

TIP OF THE DAY
8 Ways to Become Less Cynical

Avoid negative, cynical people.

When you're surrounded by negative people who view the world in a jaded, pessimistic fashion, it can be easy to behave in a similar manner. So, when cynics and complainers gather for a gripe-fest, do yourself a favor, and walk away.

Let go of the assumption that the world is against you.
It's unrealistic to believe that the universe has singled you out and shifted the world order just to make your life miserable. Sometimes bad experiences lead to good experiences, and since you can't predict the future, you can't assume it will always be bad.

Look for the source of your pessimism.
Deep-rooted negativity can often be traced to childhood experiences, as kids observe their circumstances and make presumptions about how the world functions. If all you saw growing up were disappointments, betrayals, and failure, it's no surprise that it's what you expect from the world as an adult.

Understand that the past does not equal the future.
Just because you've experienced pain or disappointment in the past does not guarantee that it's all you will experience in the future. There are also many things in life we can control to one degree or another, and therein lies the possibility of change.

Accept pain, failure, and disappointment as a part of life.
Life involves taking many risks every day, and not all of them will end positively. But some actions will lead to good results, and it's generally better to have a mixed bag than to have nothing at all.

See yourself as a cause, not an effect.
You don't have to be a product or a victim of your circumstances. Stop thinking about what is happening to you, and start thinking about what you can make happen

Focus on the good times.
When something good happens, expect that that's how things usually are.

Make goals attainable.
If you set completely unrealistic goals for yourself, you'll only become frustrated and disappointed if you're unable to achieve them. It's better to establish practical objectives, keeping in mind that you're only human.
