TIP OF THE DAY
How to Help Children Reach Their Full Potential
Children are the future. Whether we know it, or not, we are all teachers. We have a personal responsibility to help every child we know reach their full potential. The best way to do this is to teach them how to learn.

Observe and listen to your child. Find out which tasks and activities they are most successful at. Learn what interests them. Learn to recognize their unique skills and abilities. Then, you will be able to use your knowledge to provide them successful ways to learn that are fitted to their own personal learning styles.

Read-Write-Discover Verbal/Linguistic: This child likes to read, write, and play word games. They are usually good at telling stories and memorizing words along with dates. Teach this child by providing lots of books on subjects they are interested in. Encourage them to begin a journal/diary to enhance their skill with words.

Dream-Believe Visual/Spatial: This learning style is represented by the children who think in images and pictures. They're the ones who usually remember where they put everything. Typically, they enjoy drawing, designing, building things, and daydreaming. These children learn particularly well when watching educational television, slides, and movies. When teaching, be sure to include lots of graphs, charts, and pictures.

Musical/Rhythmic-auditory: Does your child walk around humming, singing, or whistling? Do they want the music on while they study? Can they remember the words to all of their favorite songs and not their multiplication facts? Then they are probably using the auditory learning style. For this style, let them have their music. They will actually learn faster. If they encounter difficulty with some particular subject, make up a silly little song to help them remember.

Every child has all types of intelligence/learning styles. They normally function better in some than others. Your goal is not to teach them only in the style they seem most comfortable with. That is where you start! Once your child has experienced a few learning successes within their comfort zone, be sure to expand and try other styles. Your goal is to show them they can succeed at learning. Each and every success will lead to the next successful learning experience.

Reach New Horizons Praise every success your child experiences. Let them know you are proud of them. Always encourage them to do their own personal best.Try to give your child a practical example of how they can personally use each piece of knowledge they gain. It's much easier to remember something when we actually know how to use it.
