TIP OF THE DAY
How to Clean House Quick!
By
TBuffington

Most of us have at least once gotten that dreaded phone call: unexpected company. The company will be arriving soon and the house is a mess. What to do? To pick up the house quickly, not everything has to be done. However, by paying attention to a few important parts of the house, our guests will feel expected and welcome in a clean household.

Step1
The first thing noticeable when entering a home is probably the clutter laying around. By straightening up magazines and organizing mail it can make a huge difference in the way a sitting area appears. By having mail hidden in an office area or proper place and only a few magazines out, the area becomes much less cluttered. [this should take no more than five minutes]

Step2
The next thing noticeable is generally the floor and how clean it appears. If you have carpet, run the vacuum quickly over the area. If your floors are tile or linoleum, quickly sweep up dust. It doesn't have to be perfect, but this is mainly to make sure that bigger pieces of noticeable dirt are picked up. If there are sticky spots (such as in a kitchen) wet a wash cloth and scrub them individually. [this should also take about 5 minutes depending on the size of the room]

Step3
Next people will usually notice dust first. If they are sitting in a living room having drinks and set one on a coffee table that has a layer of dust on it, they will now feel unwelcome and dirty. If you have wood furniture Pledge is a good dust spray to use. However, anything will work for this quick job. Use a dust rag and go over everything. By removing dust your house will become fresh looking instantly.

Step4
You are almost done now! Another important aspect of cleaning is to pay attention to the bathroom. I don't know if there is ever an instance that a guest will arrive and not have to use the bathroom. Make sure the toilet is clean!! I usually pour bleach in the toilet and let it set to remove stains. I then usually use a washcloth and scrub the sink. If the shower is dirty, simply close the door or curtain so it is not seen. (This option changes if your guests are staying overnight and will be using the shower or bath, but for visitors, this is ok). Flush the toilet, and what is not removed by flushing can be wiped down.

Step5
Finally, fluff pillows on furniture and make them look fresh. If you have air freshener such as febreeze spray it to give your house a clean smell and get yourself ready for your guests! This should have all taken approximately 20-30 minutes. If you have guests arriving quicker than that, cut something out that doesn't need to be done. If your floor is clean, skip that step and pay more attention to something necessary.
