Nancy Richard from Woman Zone

Tuesday 11 July 2017

Nancy Richards and Mkhuseli Khusi Veto

Nancy Richard from Woman Zone was here in studio to tell us all about their aims and programmes. The group is sustained by two pillars, one is bringing women of all different races, ages and backgrounds together and second is to celebrate what women are doing.  Women Zone went to different communities for a year and gathered empowering stories from women which was then recorded and put into a book called, Being A Woman In Cape Town.
Nancy Richards and Mkhuseli Khusi Veto

They have managed to orchestrate a women’s library and centre at Artscape with story cafes and story sharing to revel the power women have. We spoke about the Woman’s Arts Humanity Festival held at the Artscape and their Women’s Humanity walk from St. Georges Cathedral to Artscape which will take place on Women’s Day this year and all are encouraged to join.

The group works and interacts with women of all ages, from little girls to old ladies. Another topic of conversation was gender violence and abuse, it’s not getting better for women. Women have to work together with each other and with men to fight against these oppressions.

Marcio Lupes from Capoeira Educational Youth Association

Tuesday 11 July 2017

Marcio Lupes and Mkhuseli Khusi Veto

Marcio Lupes speaking to us about the Capoeira Educational Youth Association. The roots of capoeira come from Africa, during slavery as a way to connect with the motherland. According to Lupes, Capoeira is like a pregnant woman, who conceived in Africa and gave birth in Brazil, now it’s coming back to Africa. It is the art of movement and is born from oppression, having to adapt and change as the years go on.
Marcio Lupes and Mkhuseli Khusi Veto

Lupes began teaching in Cape Town during 2000 and visited Brazil in 2003, so he takes and gives back the knowledge he’s gained. Capoeira is comprised of dance, music, poetry, acrobatics, peace and so much more, it is about the way of living.
Marcio Lupes

It’s a completely holistic movement of expression. The youth organisation for Capoeira has been open since 2006.

Leon Isaacson from Global Migration SA

Tuesday 11 July 2017

We talked to Leon Isaacson from Global Migration South Africa about their work. Global Migration South Africa assists with bringing in skilled people to South Africa. They look at nationality, CV, qualifications and family relations when assisting individuals with their relocation to South Africa. When Home Affairs changed the rules in 2014, it became a lot more technical, difficult and expensive to relocate. According to Leon, one of Global Migration SA’s main difficulties is the critical skills list, in which people with certain skills are brought in since South Africa is not producing enough people with those particular skills, such as agriculture sciences and doctors. This to ensure that a foreigner coming into the country is not displacing a South African citizen that can do the job. Zimbabwe as well as Lesotho now have dispensation agreements with South Africa. South Africa continues to have its ups and downs politically but is favorable in many other industries including property.

Today's guest: Bugile Matiwane talking about Moses Mabhida

Today, we had Bugile Matiwane, the Provincial Chairperson of the South African Students' Congress [SASCO] in to talk about some of our history's heroes.  Today, Mr. Matiwane talked about Moses Mabhida, one of the many unsung heroes who fought for our freedom today. Mabhida was an outstanding leader of humble origins who became a dominant figure in the trade union movement, the African National Congress (ANC), South African Congress of Trade Uninons (SACTU), uMkhonto we Sizwe (MK) Commissar and the Communist Party. He was important because he was a leader and symbol for many. He embraced a progressive position on race, and found balance in alliance. He beleived race was a conduit to divide the classes and wanted to be part of a non-racial organization. To him, struggle comes from a place of love, love for the people, love for the land, etc. And that was what made Mabhida such a hero, yet such an unsung one at that.

Unlimited--The Movement

Today we had the organizers from Unlimited--The Movement in the studio to talk about their movement. The goal of their movement is to empower everyday people through the transformative power of photography. As part of their art project, they will take your picture for you after having a conversation with you about what you want from the portrait.

Although the organization does not have an official headquarters, members of the project connect over social media and meet in new places each time. Although in the past, Unlimited: The Movement has concentrated on empowering women, their new initiative strives to empower and educate men, who constantly suffer from gang violence, hyper masculinity, and substance abuse stemming from unhealthy masculine expectations. "Men bleed, men cry, men are human too," said our guests, describing this new initiative. They also report positive feedback for the program, seeing that people need the change and the unique chance to share their storytelling through photos. Lit Life in Studio!

Lit Life is an event promotion company run by five friends that helps bring accessible options for youth to party and for DJs to perform. Today, we had them in to the studio to talk about what they do. Their aim is to make every party a lit one. "Nothing basic", as they said in studio! They wanted to create an affordable partying and music sharing platform for youth, after they were kicked out of a club on Long Street. They work to cover promotion, representation, hosting, and organizing for these events and their hosts and DJs.

Their company started last year, working through struggles like lack of support and the struggle to separate personal life from work life in order to become a team. One of the main difficulties they have in the industry is facing the competition and 'entitlement issues' in the business. They say that the people in the party industry can get very territorial or possessive over their turf, and that can often be a challenge. This week, on Thursday, they have an event coming up.

Today on the Morning Cruise: A Woman's Path

In addition to a few other interviews, we had a representative in today from A Woman's Path, an organization that empowers local women to do more with their identity. Nosiviwe elaborated on how easy it is for women to forget their power and lose it, along with their purpose. Women are strong, she said, it is only a matter of finding your strength. You have to test it through strife and communal struggle. One must know how to navigate your purpose. A Woman's Purpose helps women do this by offering workshops and open spaces for talking and networking. in addition, one-on-one mentoring programs are offered, as well as the Visionaries Breakfast series. The only requirement for these programs is to be a woman, that's it. Nosiviwe talked a bit more about their upcoming projects. One of them is their high school project, where they encourage and motivate students of all genders at local high schools, and address the shock of upcoming independence from domestic life, which is not taught in school. The next upcoming event for them is the next installment of their Visionaries Sanctuary Breakfast Series at the ArtsCape center. This month, the theme is Start to Finish, addressing the motivation to see a goal through to the end. "You are not your past", says Nosiviwe. "Do not let others define you."

Now in studio: RFK Krump Dance!

RFK Krump Dance, established in 2009, is a dance school that teaches Krump dancing. Krump dancing is a very aggressive and expressive dance that tries to portray strong emotion through dance. It is a slowly growing dance type in South Africa and around the world. They have an event coming up in April called the 12th Fam Feuds, a dance battle platform, and we discussed that and what the event will be like. For more info on the event, see the social media tags below.   VIDEO TO COME

"ROYAL FAM KINGS were created as an exclusive Krump FAM in August 2009 by Cape Town Krump's most active and committed Krumpers to truly start the Cape Town Krump Movement. The initial members came together in an attempt to properly represent and push the movement of Krump in Cape Town. ROYAL FAM KINGS immediately started entering all Krump events and quickly established themselves as the first exclusive Krump FAM in Cape Town, whether performing at shows, entering battles, hosting Krump sessions, teaching, or community outreach RFK seeks to continually push the Krump movement in Cape Town. Within the structure of RFK new members are selected not on the basis of skill and dance ability and there are no auditions to join RFK, new members are instead selected on the basis of their potential, commitment and passion. Potential new members spend time with the RFK Fam and in this process relationships are formed as we are a Fam (family) and not a dance crew so this is crucial in becoming a part of RFK as the PARENT BODY." Today on Monday Live: Mathew Rudd and Alex Searle!

Today on Monday Live, we had two local musicians perform for a full hour on the Morning Cruise. Their style is best described as a fusion of African soul, folk, rock, and more. To them, genre boundaries are restricting, and cannot affect them. They performed a myriad of songs for us, utilizing a couple of different styles and instruments. We talked to the musicians about their inspirations and origins. They had a very unusual origin story: When Mathew moved to Cape Town, he was all alone, so he began looking for a band to join. While searching on Gumtree, he found Alex! That is how they met and began making music together.

About the Musicians

Matthew Rudd is a Cape Town based Singer, Song-writer and Session Guitarist. Performing live since the age of 17, he is no stranger to the world of music and entertainment. Matthew began playing the guitar at the age of 9 and hasn't stopped yet. Thanks to some talent, and a fair amount of luck, the guitar gifted Matthew the privilege of performing alongside a few of South Africa's finest musicians, namely: Jethro Butow, Francois Van Coke, Aston Creed and Vusi Mahlasela. Matthew is currently recording his first album and manages the booking of artists for events held around Cape Town under the Matt Rudd Music banner.

Alex Searle is a songwriter, singer, bass player, filmmaker, business owner, father and occasional human being based in Cape Town, South Africa. He was born to musician parents who took him around the world in their travels, living in the Middle East and Spain for a big part of his childhood. After finishing school, he played in the family band in Abu Dhabi for 8 months before starting a degree in English and Journalism at UCT. He met Matthew Rudd along the way and they've been playing together for the last 3 years. In 2015 he shot a Youtube-style solo documentary film on the culture of music in Vietnam, called South by South East. It also chronicled the journey of becoming a father during his travels with his future wife, Tiffany. It was his first film and has since been screened in both Cape Town and Hanoi, Vietnam. It is currently in the running for a number of festivals internationally. Since then, Alex has started writing music for films, become a father to a gorgeous boy named Lake and launched a video production company. He and Matthew are currently writing some new material for their debut album. VIDEO TO COME

Interview with CPUT Green Campus Initiative and Career of the Day

Today, we had a brief interview with a representative from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology's Green Campus Initiative (GCI). He talked a bit about the current draught and water crisis in Cape Town, and all the ways that we could help alleviate the strain we are putting on our water supply. He also talked about the university's GCI initiative, Water Warriors. This is a program that allows anyone to help in saving water. The initiative started about two years back, when the crisis became public. Our guest said their cause is important because, according to the city of Cape Town, our days of water are numbered, and soon, water restrictions will be put in place, cutting off the water supply for short periods of time in order to save precious water. Finally, he gave some water tips on how to save water (most of which are laid out below). To find out more, go to CPUT GCI Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CPUT-GCI-316270118496431/

Today, we had an avalanche of guests in the studio! Our day started with local afro-soul musician Mphozisi, who was joined by Ta Mavesta, a hip-hop artist from Khayelitsha. Both expressed their love of music from the very beginning, and talked about their inspirations. Both showed off their incredible performance skills live on air to an excited reception.

Later in the day, we had DJ Villivesta, an exuberant DJ from Cape Town. He talked a bit about the types of venues at which he performs, and the performance scene he knows and loves. As we are having difficulties with tech, photos and videos to come.

If you want to learn more about them, see their social media tags above, or visit the group Facebook page at SoulEnt Mageng.

Interview with Mr. Ebrahim Ryland

Today, we welcomed Mr. Ebrahim Ryland into the studio to talk about pensions for the elderly. He talked about how an Older Persons' or SASSA grant can help the elderly get money for retirement. He talked bout how to qualify, and how best to use the grant. According to Mr. Ryland, an older person's grant is a type of social assistance for those who have reached the age of retirement. In order to qualify, one has to pass a Means Test, or the process of evaluating the income and assets of the applicant. Whether you pass the means test or not depends on the consistency of one's income and security of one's assets. But do not worry about qualifying if you are unemployed; some people can if they fall in the parameters of the means test! If you would like to find out more, you can call Mr. Ryland at his office in Cape Town at 0214690235.

#FREE EDUCATION IN OUR LIFE-TIME

A CALL FOR A FREE DECOLONIZED EDUCATION FOR ALL

This morning on the Cruise ship we were blessed by the presence of the Fees Must Fall movement activists who spoke volume about their stance with regards to 0% fee increment and FREE decolonized education.
The group consisted of students from various universities of higher learning in the Western Cape.

In studio we had students from Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), University of Cape Town (UCT) and the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

Among the problems students cited was the ignorance that management of these universities were showing with regards to their demands. Students have also cited that the resolution taken by council, the highest decision making body have not been put into effect. They claim that management does not take them serious.

Recently universities have been hit by violent riots, amounting to torching and destroying of university building and equipment. Recently, it has been reported that 5 vehicles had been set alight at the CPUT Bellville campus. Students, however, have been adamant that they have nothing to do with the burning of vehicles, rather points at the private security guards deployed by universities on campus.

Setuli, representing the workers says "We are saddened as workers, for the past 20 years, one of my colleagues has been working for CPUT as a cleaner, and her take-home salary is R2,400 till to date, and no one will employ her anywhere because of her age"

"We urge the university to take us serious and in-source us so that we can earn a decent wage" concludes Setuli.

Meanwhile, student activist, Xolisani Breakfast said "This struggle is influenced by the social economic conditions that we are exposed to. Last year, we had a similar instance of Fees Must Fall and the only issue that we have a problem with is that, resolutions taken and adopted last year have not been put in practice yet.

UCT's Lethawo Monye added that "Government doesn't understand peaceful talking and the only language that it understands is violence and disruption, of which we are not about that".

He adds "our institutions have institutional power to help us voice out our demands to government, that is all that we are asking for from them. If management could rally behind us, government will definitely take us serious.

On Wednesday, it is expected universities across the country will be marching to the Union Building in Pretoria and Parliament in Cape Town.

Fruitilethu

Food Industry is one of the job creators in South Africa especially here in Cape Town as we have many Restaurant which means its also a Competitive Industry.

Fruit Salad by Fruitilethu
Fruitilethu is a company that deals with Fruit salads, it was started by 4 young entrepreneurs at school to stop the stigma that people from the township don't eat healthy food. Their business started as a school project and from the success of it their lecturer encouraged them to continue with it. Although they are not from the same townships, that did not stop them from going after their dreams.

They reach out to people through social networks because they feel that it is easier that way. Their biggest challenge at the moment is finding a balance between school and the business because school on it's own takes most of their time but in regards to food industry in the township there's none because they have to focus on their business
