Marcio Lupes and Mkhuseli Khusi Veto |
Marcio Lupes speaking to us about the Capoeira Educational
Youth Association. The roots of capoeira come from Africa, during slavery as a
way to connect with the motherland. According to Lupes, Capoeira is like a
pregnant woman, who conceived in Africa and gave birth in Brazil, now it’s
coming back to Africa. It is the art of movement and is born from oppression,
having to adapt and change as the years go on.

Lupes began teaching in Cape
Town during 2000 and visited Brazil in 2003, so he takes and gives back the
knowledge he’s gained. Capoeira is comprised of dance, music, poetry,
acrobatics, peace and so much more, it is about the way of living.

It’s a completely
holistic movement of expression. The youth organisation for Capoeira has been
open since 2006.
