The Legendary Napo Masheane

 On the BackChatShow we are interviewing a multi­-award wining creative director, playwriter and performer,Napo Masheane who is now curating a local first with Herstory International Theatre Festival.


Being born in Soweto, growing up in Qwaqwa (Free State), and currently residing in Johannesburg. In a loving home full of characters in which she draws her inspiration for her work from.  

 Napo Masheane a playwright, poet, stage director & producer, teacher and acclaimed performer on both international and national stages. Napo is a founding member of Feela Sista!Spoken Word Collective. She has a Marketing Management and Speech & Drama Diploma and and Master’s Degree in Creative Writing. She is the nominee of the Daimler Chrysler South African Poetry Award in 2005, winner of Mbokodo theatre award 2012 and Pan African Language Award 2014. She became one of the leading South African black female theatre makers, after her provocative plays such as: ‘My Bum Is Genetic Deal With It’, ‘The Fat Black Women Sing’, ‘KHWEZI… Say My Name’, and ‘My Vagina Was Not Buried With Him’.  

Napo will be doing  The Herstory International Theatre Festival in which she came up with. This will be done through creating a melting pot platform consisting of 250 artists/creatives from 17 countries in collaboration with over 20 production companies and other institutions from Africa, the diaspora and the world. The creative line-up consists of the prominent artists such as theatre maker - Kharyish Wigington (USA), dub poet d’bi young (Jamaica/Canada), visual activist and photographer Sir Zanele Muholi,  executive producers like Darling Desperado (Sweden)… performing arts practitioners like IBOKWE (RSA), Liatile Mohale (Lesotho) and guest appearance by the National Theatre of Namibia to name but a few. Its a show made by women for woman or people who see themselves as woman, I'm sure this is going to be a blast!!!!

 Napo is a force to be recognized, she is so full of life and has a magnetic energy that just makes you want to keep on listening to her "wow" the way she is so passionate about her work and you can hear that she really loves what she does.  

She is so humble and and wonderful, as the show host Thomas was introducing her and with all her achievements she was cringing but at the sametime she's like yeah that's me and all my good hardwork..

Please show some love and support those who can and watch her play at the Soweto Theater in Johannesburg.It will be a 7 day show full of amazing artistry,networking and the best of the best in production all over the world will be coming and helping out in bringing the festival to life.....
