Phakama Community Center Interview

On the Morning Cruise Show we had an interview with Nkosinathi Matomela who is part of the Phakama Community Centre. The center is about giving back to the community and uplifting young children who have lost their ways in life.

Phakama Community Center is a community center that lies in between Gugulethu and Nyanga . Phakama started in 2001,it was formed by four woman who where passionate about community development and it was first called Phakama Community Health Projects then they saw that people do not only struggle with health but with social needs as well. Then they changed their name to Phakama community Center.
In the interview Nkosinathi, went into more detail as in what Phakama Community Centre does for the community.

The center has a  creche that follows the Social Development’s ECD guide lines and standards as a way to ensure that we maintain a healthy, safe environment when a child is away from home.
The center has a nourishing feeding scheme that currently feeds about 350 impoverished people (over 18) a healthy balanced meal every single day.  They have a youth programme that  welcome youth from all walks of life. The programme is in segments where one is catered for the girls, another for the boys and a combined one where they come together and learn, expand perspectives and knowledge while cultivating respect and care for themselves as well as their community.

They have a programme has been specifically created to give previously disadvantaged women affected by GBV and Domestic violence an opportunity to empower themselves. Woman who have been affected by GBV and Domestic violence  are called to come to the community center where they would be helped by counselors and empowerment coaches where women are assisted in healing and regaining a sense of self and purpose, in believing in their ability to become financially independent, and create a better future for themselves and their children.

Nkosinathi further explains that the place where the the center is running in currently not theirs so they are undergoing ways of buying the land and it has been easy. They are raising funds creating websites where people can assist with donations because they are looking into building what is called a Safe Home that will  create a temporary safe space to house women and children affected by gender-based violence and abuse to stay while assisting them to get back on their feet and feeling empowered.

The Phakama Community Centre really loves working with and for the community and giving back to the community. The staff members are genuine in helping out people even if it means they do not get paid, they will make sure you are helped in whatever situation you are going through from children to adults they give back.
To show them love and appreciation please do look into there website and social media platforms.where you will be able to see what they are doing. Please throw in some donations or sponsors to them. A little goes a long way.
