TIP OF THE DAY
How to Live With Less
By eHow Personal Finance Editor
As we get nearer to a total credit card economy, getting ahead has become more important than staying out of debt. As people become overwhelmed by working ever harder to pay for more stuff, frugal living is a hot topic. living below your means make conscious spending decisions to live a full and rich life.
Step 1
Set Up a Budget and audit your own spending habits. Compare your expenses (including debt) with your income. If you're consistently spending more than you earn, it'll be no surprise that you're carrying a larger and larger debt load
Step 2
Make a list of short-, medium- and long-term financial goals. List in detail what you'll have to give up in order to meet each. Give yourself a reasonable period of time to practice your new spending habits in order to see progress.
Step 3
Go through your belongings and gather as much as you can.
Step 4
Favor quality over quantity, and buy the best you can afford. You'll save money in the long run since high-quality items last longer and require less maintenance. This applies to adult clothing, furniture, electronics and cars. On the other hand, buy used quality kids' clothing and toys every chance you get.
Step 5
Use cash as much as possible, and debit cards for household bills and purchases so the money is immediately deducted from a checking account at no interest.
Step 6
Put a small percentage of each paycheck into a savings account.
Step 7
Cancel needless subscriptions. Get rid of magazines you don't read, cut off your cable and pick up a book from the library instead.

WE ALSO FEATURED:
Lyndle Kearns an ex idols sweetheart, Mono Dullisear and Crushanda Forbes who joined us in studio to speak about the smash hit Rock and Roll, Rhythm and Blues Musical The Blues Brothers coming to The NewSpace Theatre on 1st July, 2009. This award winning musical celebrates the music made famous by the “pork pie and wayfarers” duo, Jake and Elwood Blues in the cult eighties movie called ‘The Blues Brothers'. The original South African production broke box office records in Johannesburg and Durban. The Cape Town season is directed by Clayton Stewart, the original Elwood Blues in the SA show. The Blues Brothers with serious attitude are played by Johan Baird and Alwyn Kotze who are joined by three Bluettes, namely Capetonians Mono Dullisear as Mono Blues, Lyndle Kearns as Lyndle Blues and Crushanda Forbes and Crushanda Blues.

We were joined by Idols runner up Poseletso Sejosingoe who crept into South African hearts with her powerful singing and enchanting smile. She’s now embracing the world of theatre. She was joined by Mandisi Dyantyis, musical director of the production at the Baxter Theatre, The Mysteries. The Mysteries brings new life to the great biblical folk plays of medieval Europe, re-imagined through a vibrant spectacle of song, dance and music and performed in the languages of South Africa. This staging is based on the mystery plays, a popular form of theatre performed on carts and pageant wagons in the streets of towns and villages all over Europe at the time. Poseletso however plays the modern day Virgin Mary. Check it out at the Baxter Theatre this month.
Lastly we spoke to John Davids who joined us to speak about the production, ‘Shapes of me’. Shapes of Me is a vibrant, new South African production created by some of the country’s most celebrated music legends in collaboration with its talented youth. Presented by Artscape’s Audience Development and Education department, in association with ComArt, a community arts organisation based in Elsies River, Shapes of Me is part of Artscape’s broader programme to celebrate Youth Day and showcase the talent of South African youth. In recognition of the significant contribution that the youth can make in the shaping of our democratic future. It’s done through the eyes of the youth illustrating life as a youth-ling in 2009. Check it out at the Artscape this weekend. The matinee 14:30pm or 20:30pm www.artscape.co.za
