TIP OF THE DAY
How to Stay Mentally Sharp

Face it, as we get older, our minds tend to lose their sharpness. We start forgetting things, like people's names or what item was next on our mental "to-do" list. But aging doesn't have to be synonymous with a dull brain. Here are a few ways to keep you mentally sharp:
Step 1
Use puzzles to flex your brain muscle.
LEFT BRAIN WORKOUTS:
The left side of your brain is believed to be in control of your reasoning, language, and math skills. To keep it running at full capacity, try learning a new language or completing puzzles (Sudoku is a good option).
Step 2
Join a choir or learn to play piano

RIGHT BRAIN WORKOUTS:
The right side of your brain handles the creative stuff. Keep this side sharp by practicing a musical instrument, learning a new craft or hobby, or even singing in a choir.
Step 3
Meditation is good for your overall health

OVERALL BRAIN WORKOUT:
Learn to meditate. Meditation lowers the effects of stress and anxiety, and activates the brain's control center for happiness and contentment.Practice your memorization skills. Remember when you were a child and set out to memorize everything from states in the Union, to the multiplication tables? Your mind thrives when you practice memory skills, so maybe now's the time to commit to memory Lewis Carroll's Jabberwocky, or Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's A Psalm of Life.Stay engaged in social activities. Having a busy social calendar has been linked to reducing mental deterioration.

WE ALSO FEATURED:
Maboyz Mfunifelwa from Empilweni a community-based Mental Health Project situated in Khayelitsha. As well as Cynthia Du Plessis from Girls and Boys Town, the largest private childcare organisation in South Africa. They joined us today on the show to discuss the behavioural and emotional problems of girls and boys.

The origins of the behavioural problems stem from various situations. It can be caused by the home environment, in this case a bad environment, being abused (sexual etc), divorce of parents, loses, bad parenting. We’ve also discovered kids with behavioural and emotional problems mother’s might’ve experienced labour problems. Labour complications such as long labour pains, foetus being too big and mostly importantly can be caused by mothers who consume alcohol during pregnancy.

Symptoms of serious behavioural and emotional problems in kids are: being withdrawn, kids extremely disobedient at home and in school (uncontrollable), stealing and lying. The more serious symptoms are: Hearing voices and seeing things of which everyone else does not.

In the long term if the situation is not addressed the kids could get involved in gangsterism, drugs, become suicidal, mental disturbed and more.

Differences between girls and boys behavioural and emotional problems are few but the more common differences are boys tend to become aggressive. Boys will act out by being aggressive toward friends, in the playground etc. Girls being emotional beings for instance if they were sexual abused they would become promiscuous at a young age and overly adult-like. Girls tend to be longing for emotional stimulation etc.
