Over the past 30 years, many of Peru's glaciers have melted away, and experts fear that the remainder could disappear in as little as 20 more. One inventor trying to reverse this process is Eduardo Gold, whose proposed plan to whitewash peaks of the Peruvian Andes that were once covered with glaciers was one of 26 winning ideas in the World Bank's "100 Ideas to Save the Planet" competition. The theory is that by lightening the color of the mountain peaks, humans can increase the amount of solar energy reflected back through the atmosphere and out into space and thereby reduce the amount absorbed by the Earth.
