Professor Sigamoney Naicker, a call for inclusive education reform

This Wednesday we welcomed Professor Sigamoney Naicker into the studio, he wrote the book; 'Education and the Working Class: Is there hope for an inclusive approach?' where he discusses the education system.

In his new book, education expert Professor Naicker sheds light on the urgent need for South Africa’s education system to become more inclusive. Launched in September 2024, the book challenges the current framework, which he argues is dominated by money, power, and politics, leaving behind working-class and vulnerable children.

Professor Naicker is also a teacher at the University of the Western Cape, he has spent years researching the struggles faced by children that he saw first hand. His work delves deep into why so many of these students are left behind by a system that was designed with middle-class families in mind, whitout keeping the working class in mind. In his book he mentions that the need for different approaches aren't only focused on academic needs but also the psychosocial challenges; trauma, poverty and lack of social and cultural capital.

He believes that we live in a careless world, with his book and ideas he is hoping to start a small debate that will eventually spread out to something bigger. His book is supposed to be a wake-up call, sparking the much-needed conversations about how we can help kids out in future of not only South-Africa but everywhere in the world. According to him it's time that school ask themselves the questions of they are really as inclusive as they say. After all the youth it the future.
