In the mid-1990s, a Dutch professor of medical psychology proposed the existence of a "Type D", for "distressed," personality, which describes people who are prone to negative thinking, gloom, and social inhibition. Now, researchers say there is a clear connection between these psychological traits and heart risk. Among people with a history of heart disease, those with Type D personalities are nearly four times more likely to experience heart attack, heart failure, heart rhythm disorders, death, and other negative outcomes than those with different personality profiles.
