Finding Your Voice with EYOW SA: A New Blueprint for Township Talent

EYOW SA: Building a Creative Community, One Win at a Time

Turning the Township into a Launchpad for Talent

Recently on Bush Radio 89.5 FM’s Morning Cruise, the team from EYOW SA (Encourage Your Own Win South Africa) shared their inspiring journey. Their mission? To provide young creatives from South African townships with a supportive space for expression, growth, and collaboration—so everyone can “encourage their own win” and inspire others to do the same.

A Movement Born from Personal and Collective Need

Mfundo, the founder, revealed the deeply personal roots of EYOW SA. Growing up in the township, he often felt alone in his ambitions—without mentors or a support system to nurture his vision and talent. “We’re taught the township is a jungle: everyone for themselves,” he explained. EYOW SA wants to change that mentality and revive the spirit of Ubuntu: “A person is a person through other people.” The organization encourages everyone to succeed and also to pave the way for those who come after, providing a blueprint and tools for progress.

A Diverse Team, United by Passion

EYOW SA is powered by a passionate and diverse team:

  • Carl: Known as the “resident Mlungu,” Carl joined after hearing Mfundo’s authentic rap at an open mic. “Art is truth, and when people speak truth through art, something powerful happens,” Carl says. For him, EYOW SA is about community, finding your voice, and reconnecting with your creativity.

  • Ayama: Initially shy about performing, Ayama found the encouragement she needed at EYOW SA to showcase her singing talent. Now, she manages admin and promotes sessions, helping other young people find the courage to express themselves.

  • Lax van de Boza: Invited to a “roasting session,” Lax’s energy and talent quickly made him a regular organizer. He embodies the collective’s spirit of openness and sharing.

  • Zamor: A producer, videographer, and creative, Zamor discovered her community at EYOW SA. Now the group’s chairperson, she helps others realize their hidden talents and gain confidence in the arts.

Practical Support for Young Creatives

EYOW SA doesn’t just inspire they act! The collective connects artists with opportunities to perform, create, and collaborate. Need a professional music video but don’t have the budget? EYOW SA pools resources to make the impossible accessible at affordable rates. “What you need might already be within reach you just need to get involved and open up to others,” says Mfundo.

Carl adds, “What young people need isn’t always a business, but a community. That’s what inspires, supports, and grows every talent.

Events that Bring Cultures Together

EYOW SA regularly organizes events that blend township energy, suburban influences, and the full diversity of South Africa. Expect music, poetry, rap, and open mic sessions—more than just performances, these are spaces for connection, learning, and co-creation.

A Collective Open to All

EYOW SA’s greatest strength is its inclusivity. Whether you’re an artist, organizer, or simply searching for your creative voice, there’s a place for you. “Many people don’t even realize the talents they have until they’re given the space and encouragement to discover them,” says Zamor.

Conclusion

EYOW SA is more than an arts collective it’s a movement transforming the township into a place of expression, solidarity, and shared success. By breaking isolation and building community, EYOW SA helps young creatives write their own stories and encourage their own wins, inspiring future generations along the way.
