Dr Joe Schaffers

Dr Joe Schaffers

The Morning Cruise conducted a telephonic interview with former educator, tour guide and musician at the District 6 Museum, he had recently received his Honorary Doctorate from the University of Edinburgh, in recognition of his efforts to educate the public about the District 6 community that was torn apart by apartheid.

Growing up in the community of District 6 he mentioned that everyone within the community were living in harmony with each other, people would struggle but they woulnd’t find the need to rob or even threaten anyone to survive, until the apartheid government came and forcefully removed everyone out of District 6.

According to Dr Schaffers, the Apartheid government started to separate every race group, causing each race group to look at other race groups differently whereas the times living in District 6 everyone was living as one human race.

Dr Schaffers also worked as a City Health Inspector, this position abled him to notice the struggles within his communities and with the Health Inspector position he was able to help and assist those in need, he then decided to become an educator to teach the youth about the history of Apartheid and District 6.
