Today on the Morning Cruise Show we were Joined by Debbie from Cape Town City Ballet.
The Southern Hemisphere’s oldest ballet company and one of the oldest in the world. 1934 University of Cape Town Ballet Company, 1964 CAPAB Ballet Company, 1997 Cape Town City Ballet (CTCB). Section 21 company, not for gain.
Many of their foremost South African choreographers are given opportunities early in their careers to create works on the CTCB and it's forerunners.
These include Veronica Paeper, Christopher Kindo, and Sean Bovim, who still create extensively both here and abroad, and more recently Lindy Raizenberg and Kirsten Isenberg.
The CTCB is renowned throughout South Africa and internationally for it's diversity of works in the repertoire and the dancers for their inimitable energy and style – characteristics that stamp the company as uniquely South African. CTCB has a long-standing practice of developing South African choreographic talent.
At the moment they are busy with two productions one being everyone's favourite love story Romeo and Juliet and Ikigai - It is a Japanese story about the philosophy of life.
They have a training programme for young children where they have lessons in the morning with one of their ballet teachers and mentors and they have alot of other dancing programmes around Cape Town and in the townships of Cape Town.
The way that these dancers are dedicated and have so much passion with what they do, when during the lock-down last year in auditorium that normally sits 1500 people had on 50 people and they gave those 50 people the greatest show. That shows how much they love their work and how they will perform for anyone when given the opportunity to do so.
