Vox pop: How would you as an individual make South Africa a better place for all?
During these turmoil times in
South Africa, we face a lot of uncertainty with the rise in cost of living, the
unemployment status and uprising of civilians who are simply fed up with the
cards they have been dealt. The interns of Bush Radio took the streets of Salt
River to find out how an ordinary South African citizen would make a change in
this land, for the betterment of everyone else – Let’s see what they had to say.
As we took the streets, the
sun hiding behind the clouds – people were surprisingly open to sharing their
opinions even when they realized they’d be on camera. What helped with the
matter was the type of question introduced to them – “How can you as an
individual change South Africa for the better”. To be fair, this question could
easily apply some of pressure to the interviewees due to the sensitivity of it,
but despite of it all, we got really good and constructive opinions from the
public. When approaching a group of women standing outside their place of work,
off first glance they knew they’d be asked to say something and immediately put
up a defense but after introducing the question – we quickly saw a change in
attitude and many thought provoking opinions soon followed with one woman saying “ As a nurse, I would ensure that all
that patients get treated with utmost respect as I wasn’t” and although this
opinion was not directed at changing South Africa as a whole, her opinion spoke
volumes.
As the interviews went by, we
realized that most people felt strongly about the state of our government with
most of them saying “We need to reshuffle the entire cabinet” – although these
were strong opinions, it could not be denied as this experiment gave a platform
and a voice to our people.
