Helping the Rural Child

On the Morning Cruise Show we were joined by Matthew Che a charity shop called Help the Rural Child. It is a chain of retail charity shops that generates an income to support the programmes that support impoverished children.

Help The Rural Child’s primary focus is supporting children that live in vulnerable rural communities, they reach a wider group of people through their charity shops, as they collect unwanted items in good condition and sell them at affordable prices. This creates a win win situation for the communities involved.

Their Vision is to turn otherwise invisible rural children into happy, secure citizens and their mission is create a sustainable contribution towards rural development from the funds generated by a network of charity shops and other fundraising activities.

The Charity Shop was established in 2006 under Catholic Wealth-fare and Development and a few years later they became independent and called themselves Help The Rural Child. The time they started it was just a book shop, on the corner of Victoria Road (in Cape Town, Mowbray) and then they ventured into clothing then they blossomed from there.

They are in aid of / support of an organisation called Goedgedacht Trust which is found in the Swaartland area. Currently, they are working in 17 communities and before covid they were supporting 1500 children daily through their POP center which stands for ( Path Onto Prosperity), these centers assisted children with food, homework, they basically were a safe  environment for child to grow in.

They have community gardens in which it is run by the community and home gardens that people within the community can grow food in their own back yards. With that people can trade around and be able to have different kinds of vegetables per day.

The Academy that they have, Matthew says it is a long 21 year process, they work with the children from the time they are born until they are young adults at 18years to 21years. The time they reach 21years, the academy they helps them to find employment so that they will be able to bring in money for their homes.

Help the Rural Child is a wonderful Charity Organisation that changes children's and people's lives for the better. They give alot of hope to people and children who feel like they don't have anything to live for.
