DANNY RASS
Morning
cruise was joined by the outspoken Danny Rass, from Michelle’s Plain, and he
shared with us some of the struggles faced in his community concerning the
Elderly.
Mr Rass is
part of the Michelle’s Plain United Residants Association (MURA). The
foundation is aimed around helping the seniors and socially engaging with
local, provincial and business partners. Established in 2016, the foundation
was initially an idea to be the a voice on behalf of the people who could not
speak up for themselves.
Danny
mentioned during the interview that “working in the community is tough”, and that the foundation wants peoples
mindsets to change. In the same breath, he shared that they have overcome some
challenges they faced especially political ones.
As a senior
citizen himself, Danny said that “pensioners and seniors with disabilities are
still expected to walk to the nearest rent office, this being in Lenteguer, to
be able to collect their monthly pension where the City of Cape Town has the
resources and people available to reach out and deliver it”.
He further shared with us that according to the Older Persons Act Section 26, ‘Any person who suspects an elder has been abused or suffered from abuse related injury must immediately notify the Director General or the police of his or her suspicion’. Adding on to statement, Section 3 states, “A person who fails to comply with this sub-section 1 is guilty of an offense”, followed by a statement from Mr Rass that shared he believes that the City is guilty of an offense.
Closing off the interview, Mr Danny Rass ended with a cry to the youth. He urged them to do something in their own communities and go find out the challenges the seniors have to face everyday, only then will they understand.
