Telephonic Interview with Marguerite Holtzhausen

The Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture with Marguerite Holtzhausen

This morning on the Morning Cruise, we were joined by the Executive Director of The Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture, Marguerite Holtzhausen. Founded in 1993, the centre has aimed to be a foundation of support for those harmed by apartheid's political atrocities and has provided numerous counselling sessions throughout Cape Town. The centre holds monthly markets in District Six to raise funds and conscientize the public about victims exposed to violence and to also show support to local communities.

History and Mission of the The Trauma Centre for Survivors of Violence and Torture

The centre is based in Woodstock in a building called Cowley House which housed the family members of political prisons, held on Robben Island, during the 1970s and1980s. Holtzhausen invites those passionate to learn about the history of our country to walk through the house and to attend the upcoming monthly market which is being held on the 29 June 2024.

Types of Counselling Services Provided by the Centre and the Communities Who Are

Assisted.

Holtzhausen said that the centre helps people who are exposed to violence, gender-base violence, child abuse, etc. especially in communities in the Cape Flats such as Nyanga, Belhar, Bonteheuwel and more. She mentioned how social workers are sent out from the centre into those communities to offer counselling to victims.

Local Participation and Collaborations to Promote Awareness and Prevent Violence

Holtzhausen also said that the centre provides training to volunteers on the behalf of the Department of Social Development. By collaborating with local volunteers it builds a level of trust between the community and the centre as it makes others more willing to attend counselling sessions and to become volunteers themselves to combat against violence.

So if you are willing to take part in the centre to show your support, feel free to book a stall at the monthly markets so that you can sell your own products. Your contribution to the centre makes all the difference when trying to protect children and adults who need help in their struggle against violence.
