Studio Interview with Auria van Wyk

The Future of High Jump

Do you like sport? So do we! Today on the Morning Cruise, we had the pleasure of hosting 10 year old upcoming and aspiring athlete, Auria van Wyk. Young Auria is a high jump athlete from Montana Primary School, in Bonteheuwel, who showcased her talents at the primary school championships in the Western Cape as well as the national championships in Limpopo. Joined by her mother, Bronwyn, Auria reflected on her journey to success and the numerous amount of support she received along the way.

Not only has Auria won gold twice at Vygieskraal Stadium in its two respective rounds but also broke the Dal Josafat under-10 high jump record of 1.24m. The record had been standing since 1996, which Auria broke with a shocking new record of 1.28m! Auria truly proved the statement "the sky is the limit" by coming first again at the primary school national championship in Limpopo and setting a new personal record of 1.29m.

Auria trains every Tuesday and Thursday at UWC with her coach from 17:00-18:00. Her training routine consists of her rolling on her foam roller, walking around on her heels and toes and also running laps; a vigorous routine but nothing the ten year old can't handle.

When asked about how she overcomes the challenges she experiences as an athlete, Auria replied how she always tries to "push" herself especially in her training whether that's running those laps or practicing her strides. She motivates herself to do her training by remembering how she was able to take her mom to Limpopo, which she is extremely proud of. She expressed her gratitude to everyone who supported and helped her and her mom get to Limpopo.

Auria is extremely passionate when it comes to her sport, always asking for more and never fully sated until she is able compete and do what she loves. Auria said that she enjoys her sport because it's "fun" which I think is incredible as many often forget that the most important thing to do while playing a sport is to simply have fun. She went on to tell us what she always tells herself before every competition, "If I lose at least I had fun." She expressed her desire to one day represent South Africa in the Olympics for high jump. Auria sure has a bright future ahead of her and we cannot wait to see how she flourishes in her future endeavors!
