CHANTAL COOPER
Morning
cruise was joined via telephone by Chantal Cooper from the Children’s Hospital Trust. She was eager to share with us more
about the hospital trust and the upcoming plans they had.
The children’s
hospital trust is an independent non-profit organisation established in 1994.
The trust relies on the support of donors to realise its aims and objectives.
Each and every donation goes directly to prioritise healthcare needs and not a
single cent is spent on administration costs.
One of the
main targets for the organisation at the moment is raising R1 million to
facilitate the movement of the current orthopaedic ward, which is based in
Newlands. The plan is to move to the Red Cross Memorial Children’s Hospital by
2025.This entails building and equipping a new orthopaedic ward and upgrading
an adjacent theatre for orthopaedic surgeries.
Chantal also
shared with us that she deals with some challenges, thus being, her main role
is to raise funds for the hospital as they are non-profit and work alongside
the western cape government. She also believes that adults have the ability to
create a safe space for children to grow up. She also mentioned that some
children that come through the hospital have often been sexually abused or
children that are neglected.
She also mentioned
that during Covid they were fortunate enough to have funders supported them
throughout those tough times and that is what sparked the idea for the new
orthopaedic ward. She also mentioned
that they have not raised as much already regarding their r1 million goal and
that the hospital needs at least a 30 bed ward for children with disability,
but, she remains hopeful and encourages anyone to support and join.
Chantal was
kind enough to share her details as well and welcomes anyone to contact her on 0712244777.

She ended the interview by saying that all children are looking for is to be loved and that she feel grateful for everyone around her and encourages people to be grateful for what they have. She wants everyone to always be kind.
