Supporting Dubmasta China: A Call to Action with Farrell Adams

Today, we’re shining a light on one of Cape Town’s most beloved musicians, Dubmasta China, and the incredible community effort to support him during a challenging time. China, a cornerstone of the local music scene for years, has faced a tough health battle after being diagnosed with a tumor in his frontal lobe. After undergoing successful surgery earlier this year, China’s recovery is slow but steady, with the road to full recovery still ahead of him.

We  had the chance to speak with Farrell Adams, a close friend of China and a key figure in organizing the fundraising campaign and benefit concert that are aimed at helping him rebuild his life. Farrell shared insights into the journey that China has been on, both personally and within the larger context of the music community that has rallied around him.

Battling Health Challenges

China’s health struggles have been deeply impactful not only for him but also for the people around him. The tumor, located deep in his frontal lobe, caused severe health problems, including memory loss, difficulty with motor functions, and the inability to care for himself. Farrell recalls how China had disappeared from the music scene for a while, and it was only after the intervention of his friend Lameez that they discovered the extent of China’s condition. The tumor, which was the size of a tennis ball, had gone undiagnosed for too long, severely affecting China’s quality of life.

After undergoing surgery earlier this year, China’s recovery has been gradual. Though the surgery was successful, Farrell emphasizes that the recovery process is slow and requires constant rehabilitation. Day-to-day life remains challenging, but Farrell notes that China has shown incredible strength and determination throughout his journey. Despite the setbacks, China has been able to communicate and reconnect with his loved ones and the music community that has missed him dearly.

Rallying the Community for Support

In the wake of China’s health struggles, it quickly became clear that he would need help. What started out as a small fundraiser exploded in size as people who had been impacted by China’s music and legacy came together to offer their support.

The response has been overwhelming, with people from all walks of life - including fellow musicians, fans, and those who’ve had personal connections with China - coming together to contribute. The fundraising efforts have been spearheaded by Justine Spruyt, a close friend of Farrell’s who lives in the UK, and the support has poured in from across the globe. From heartfelt messages of gratitude to donations, the campaign has become a testament to the love that China has cultivated over the years.

The Benefit Concert: A Celebration of China’s Legacy

The cornerstone of this fundraising initiative is the Benefit Concert that will take place on Sunday, 27th April at Trenchtown in Observatory. This event is more than just a fundraiser; it’s a celebration of China’s enormous contribution to the Cape Town music scene. The concert will feature an exciting lineup, including:

  • Farrell’s band Higher Grade, known for their reggae renditions of pop songs

  • Crosby Bolani and Teba Shumba, who have shared stages with China in the past

  • Sons of Selassie, a reggae powerhouse

  • Com.t and B Wise, closing the night with old school drum and bass and jungle beats

  • and many more!

The event will be 420-friendly and family-friendly, offering a space for people of all ages to gather in support of China. Admission is only R50, but Farrell encourages attendees to give what they can, as donations will be collected at the door.

For those who are unable to attend but still wish to contribute, donations can be made via the Backabuddy platform, which continues to raise funds for China’s recovery.

Looking Ahead: Hope for the Future

As Farrell pointed out, while China’s recovery is far from complete, there’s much to be hopeful about. The support from the community has been invaluable, providing China with the strength and motivation he needs to keep fighting. Every step forward, no matter how small, is a victory, and Farrell is optimistic that with continued support, China will keep improving.

For Farrell, this concert and fundraising effort are about more than just financial aid. It’s about community - about coming together to honor someone who has given so much to the people of Cape Town through his music, his kindness, and his passion. The benefit concert is not only an opportunity to give back to China but also a chance for the community to show him just how much he is loved and appreciated.

The message from Farrell and the entire community is clear: China is not alone in this journey. The outpouring of love, support, and encouragement is a testament to the powerful impact that his music and his spirit have had on so many people. With the ongoing help of his community, China is steadily on the path to recovery - and with their continued support, he will make it through.
