Manenberg's very own Wassim Chellan has been making waves in the South African boxing scene and beyond, and he’s not slowing down anytime soon. With a fight coming up on April 19th, Wassim is ready to prove that his journey is far from over. Having made his mark on the international stage with an unforgettable challenge for the IBO International title in Germany, Wassim’s return home is filled with determination and a renewed sense of purpose.
A Humble Beginning and the Power of Resilience
Wassim’s story is one of resilience, overcoming adversity, and finding purpose in the face of hardship. Growing up in a tough environment, he faced challenges that most couldn’t even imagine. But it was a heartbreaking loss that truly set him on his path to boxing.
"My father got gunned down close to Mitchell’s Plain. I was a little bit troubled at the time," he recalls. But even in the midst of grief and confusion, Wassim made a promise to his father to finish his schooling - a commitment that would change the course of his life.
"Boxing found me," Wassim shares. "If his death never took place, I wouldn’t have become a boxer today. It wasn’t easy, but I found myself in that space."
The Turning Point: Learning from Defeat
Wassim’s international debut in Germany, where he challenged for the IBO International title, was a pivotal moment in his career. Despite losing by decision, he doesn’t view the defeat as a setback. Instead, he sees it as a learning opportunity.
“It was my first experience outside the country. I don’t see it as a loss, I see it as a learning lesson,” Wassim explains. "I was determined, I wasn’t on the back foot all the time in that fight. I dropped the guy in the first round, but sometimes, when you lose, it gives you more hunger to improve."
The experience taught Wassim invaluable lessons about the sport and himself. “You have to be a little bit uncomfortable. It was a blessing in disguise,” he adds.
Wassim's boxing journey isn’t just about titles or accolades - it's about breaking the cycle for himself and others. “I want my children to have a better life. It’s about leaving a legacy,” he says. This mindset has pushed him to stay focused, even when the odds seem stacked against him.
He also brings this mentality into his training, pushing himself to the limit even through tough times like Ramadan. “You wake up in the morning, have your meal, and then you’re fasting the whole day. People think it’s hard, but it actually motivates you more,” he says. "You can expect fireworks on April 19th - I’m ready."
Looking Ahead: The Ultimate Goal
With his eyes set on a South African welterweight title, Wassim’s next fight is crucial in proving his place among the top contenders. “I’m still number one in South Africa, and I’m mentally ready to challenge for it,” he states confidently. “I’ve been working hard, and the goal is to be the next South African welterweight champion.”
His ultimate dream? Becoming a world champion. “If they can do it, why can’t I?” Wassim says, looking up to the likes of his teammates who are already world champions.
As Wassim prepares for his next big fight, he’s calling on supporters and potential sponsors to help him continue his journey. Whether through equipment donations, sponsorships, or simply showing up to cheer him on, every bit of support counts.
A Fighter’s Mindset
What sets Wassim apart from many in his division is his mindset. "It’s you against you," he says. "You can have the best coach, the best arena, but at the end of the day, it’s about what you put in. If you don’t capitalize on it, it’s a loss on your side."
His unwavering determination is evident not only in the ring but in his everyday life. "If you can think it, you can do it," he says. "You can come out of your environment and become someone better."
As Wassim prepares for April 19th, we at Bush Radio and all of Cape Town are cheering him on. His story is an inspiration to anyone who has ever faced a setback or struggled with adversity — showing that with the right mindset and determination, anything is possible.
