Interview José Dias

 Interview of José Dias a renowned pianist known for his evocative performances and unique blend of classical and contemporary styles.



We were lucky enough to interview José Dias, who told us about his experiences, and career in the word of music. 


Residing in Cape Town, he has enchanted audiences both locally and internationally with his musical prowess. Today, we spoke to him about his musical journey, inspirations, and his experiences living and performing in Cape Town.


José Dias, born in Portugal, began piano lessons at 12. He studied music in South Africa, earning his BMus Honours from the University of Stellenbosch. After further studies in Switzerland, he worked as a repetiteur at Cape Town Opera until 2011, accompanying artists in concerts and productions spanning various composers. Dias remains a regular collaborator with CTO, notably as musical director and pianist for the CTO African Angels production since 2013.


Since 2011, José Dias has built a remarkable freelance performing career, gracing major concert halls in South Africa and prestigious Arts Festivals. He's performed internationally in Portugal, Israel, Netherlands, Belgium, Switzerland, and Germany. Renowned as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician, he's collaborated with top South African artists and performed with leading orchestras. He's also served as an official accompanist at prestigious competitions.

José Dias co-created and curates the RISE concert series with the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra, featuring young South African talent in unique repertoire. He champions new music, premiering works by local composers like Hendrik Hofmeyr, Alexander Johnson, and Braam du Toit, some tailored for him. Recordings of many of these performances are available on CD.
