Helping New Mothers and Infants: Bless A Baby

This morning we spoke with a representative from the organization Bless A Baby, which runs a public awareness drive for young mothers and their newborn babies. The NPO group of volunteers sew large baby bags and fill them with the basic essentials mothers need for the first few days of her baby’s life.

The hand-filled bags of supplies include materials like wrapping blankets, clothing, face cloths, soap, nappies, and sometimes even cuddly dolls. Bless A Baby delivers these bags to hospitals in the hopes that mothers who ordinarily do not have access to baby supplies can begin the first few days after birth without needing to worry about baby supplies.

Based in Durbanville, Bless A Baby provides bags for 7 different hospitals in the area. In the future, however, the organization is looking to expand. They currently work with similar organisations in Khayelitsha and Langa, but hope to expand their own work further. The organisation has been going strong for the past 15 years and are now seeing the first babies becoming teenagers.
