Antoinette, artistic director and chorus master, explains that this project is essential for Cape Town Opera. It allows opera to be accessible to those who might not be able to afford tickets or travel to classical theaters. These free concerts in local communities provide a rich musical experience, blending not only operatic arias but also traditional songs, musical theater classics, and contemporary pieces. The goal is to show that opera is not reserved for an elite but can touch all audiences, regardless of age or background.

Recently, the team went through a difficult time with the loss of a precious chorus member who passed away from cancer. The concerts had to be postponed but will now be dedicated to his memory, honoring his commitment and passion for opera.

The concert program favors accessible and diverse pieces, with little traditional opera but many musical theater songs, traditional chants, and American spirituals. Among Antoinette’s favorites are pieces by the Bala Brothers and songs from famous musicals like My Fair Lady. This musical diversity aims to please all tastes and keep the concert lively and engaging.
