Young Women in Stem Conference Interview with Jolene Van Heerdan.

On Wednesday, the Morning Cruise welcomed Jolene Van Heerdan, communications manager for MAHLE about an upcoming conference entitled “Young Women in STEM.”

The conference, hosted by MAHLE will be held on August 1, 2024 at the ICC in Durban and aims to inspire and motivate young women interested in careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.

”MAHLE is an automotive company,” said Van Heerdan. “So we feel that we have a responsibility to educate and inspire young girls that are in school and are considering a career in STEM.”

The conference is expecting to host about 250 of the top young women from grades 10 and 11. Van Heerdan says that this conference is targeting all schools, no matter the level of resources the schools have.

“It’s all about motivation, and it’s also about providing [girls] the tools that they need so that they can be open to all the opportunities available to them,” said Van Heerdan.

The conference will feature top speakers in robotics, science experiments, representatives from different universities, and career guidance.

Van Heerdan says the goal for the conference is that young women understand all the different career options available in STEM. She also said that she hopes girls walk away from the conference knowing the necessary steps to enter into the STEM field.
