DJ Mid-Tempo on Blending Business, Creativity and African Sounds

DJ Mid-Tempo on Blending Business, Creativity and African Sounds

Broadcast Date: 3 September 2026

This morning on Morning Cruise, we welcomed South African DJ, producer, entrepreneur and tech executive Theo Mosega, professionally known as DJ Mid-Tempo.

Currently travelling between Berlin and Nuremberg, DJ Mid-Tempo joined us to discuss his musical journey, his upcoming debut album Cheza Kidogo, and his mission to take African electronic music to a global audience.

For many people, business and music seem like two completely different worlds. For DJ Mid-Tempo, however, they complement each other.

Having spent over two decades in executive leadership while building a successful career in technology, he explained that music has always been his creative escape. His background in software development also helped him master music production, allowing him to transform years of experience as a vinyl collector and DJ into creating original music.

Living and working between Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Berlin has given DJ Mid-Tempo a unique perspective on music.

He spoke about how South Africa remains the heartbeat of African electronic music, while Berlin exposes him to one of the world's biggest electronic music cultures. By combining these influences, he hopes to create music that stays true to its African roots while connecting with audiences across Europe and beyond.

His latest single, Throw All My Love, is a perfect example of this vision, blending Afro-house rhythms with English lyrics that resonate with international listeners.

DJ Mid-Tempo's debut album, Cheza Kidogo, is set for release on 11 September 2026.

He shared that every song on the project tells a personal story. Tracks explore themes of love, heartbreak, identity, family, healing and hope.

One of the most personal songs, Throw All My Love, was inspired by the emotional journey following the end of a long-term relationship. Other tracks celebrate his heritage while reflecting on the experiences that have shaped his life.

One of the most fascinating insights from the interview was learning that nearly 70% of the album was produced while travelling, including during long-haul international flights.

With limited internet access in the air, DJ Mid-Tempo used the uninterrupted time to write, produce and refine his music, proving that creativity can flourish anywhere when passion meets discipline.

Beyond creating music, DJ Mid-Tempo is passionate about developing young artists through Tahoe Studios.

He believes South Africa needs more long-term artist development rather than focusing only on viral success. Through mentorship, collaboration and professional guidance, Tahoe Studios aims to help emerging musicians build sustainable careers.

He also encouraged aspiring artists who may not have access to professional resources to reach out to the studio, reminding young creatives that talent, commitment and hard work can open doors.

As anticipation builds for the release of Cheza Kidogo, DJ Mid-Tempo hopes listeners will not only connect with his music but also discover the talented vocalists and producers featured throughout the album.

His vision is clear: to showcase African creativity on the global stage while creating music that inspires, connects and moves people across cultures.

Morning Cruise thanks DJ Mid-Tempo for joining us and sharing his inspiring journey of balancing executive leadership with artistic passion. His story reminds us that success isn't about choosing between careers and creativity—it's about finding the courage to pursue both.
