From Classroom to Kitchen: How MoSmash is Serving More Than Just Burgers in Mitchells Plain
This week on Tasty Tuesdays with Morning Cruise on Bush Radio 89.5FM, we had the privilege of speaking to two inspiring guests behind one of Mitchells Plain’s most exciting new food ventures: MoSmash. Founder Shafee-Ullah and his colleague — and former student, joined us in studio to share the story behind their flavorful journey from teacher and student to kitchen collaborators.
MoSmash, a proudly local smash burger joint, opened its doors in August 2024. But the dream started long before that. For Shafiwula, who teaches Consumer Studies — a subject that combines cooking with education — the goal was not just to serve delicious food, but to build something original, community-rooted, and growth-driven. “We wanted something that’s our own,” he told us. “A brand, not just a business.”
The connection between education and entrepreneurship is at the heart of MoSmash. Daemon was one of Shafiwula’s first students in 2020. After graduating, he stayed in touch, and when the idea for MoSmash came to life, he was the first to be called. Now, Daemon is studying to become a professional chef while gaining hands-on experience in the MoSmash kitchen.
Their story is one of mentorship, passion, and purpose. Starting from a home kitchen with a single fryer and a griddle, the duo grew MoSmash into a food truck that now serves events and loyal customers across the city. From day one, the Mitchells Plain community has played a vital role in their growth. “Our customers are like family,” said Shafiwula. “They celebrate every small win with us — whether it's a new fryer or a new menu item.”
Speaking of menu items, what makes MoSmash special? “Everything is made from scratch,” they explained. From their unique spices to hand-crafted sauces and patties, MoSmash offers a flavor you won’t find anywhere else. Even self-proclaimed non-beef eaters have been converted by their smash burgers.
But the vision doesn’t stop at food. MoSmash is building a brand — not just a burger joint. “There’s a difference between running a business and running a brand,” Shafiwula said. With plans to expand into clothing and other creative avenues, MoSmash is on a mission to build something lasting, multidimensional, and proudly local.
For young entrepreneurs listening, their advice is simple but powerful: You’ll never know if something can succeed unless you try. Their story is proof of that — and a reminder that passion, community, and courage can take you further than you think.
