TIP OF THE DAY
How to Spend Time With Family

Have a great time, grow a lot closer to your family members and make new memories by scheduling regular family fun nights. Choose convenient times and plan activities that will entertain everyone. Most of all, be enthusiastic about the togetherness.

Step 1
Schedule a regular night for family time, so everyone knows not to set up other dates, appointments or plans with friends during those times. Aim for days that don't typically find any of you working late, studying for tests or attending business or club meetings.

Step 2
Draw up a schedule to determine who will select the next family activity. Assure the family unit that you're rotating the privilege, so nobody grumbles about doing something they're not "into." Generate a list of possible outings, games, crafts or discussion topics to help younger family members choose.

Step 3
Keep it affordable by mixing ideas you can do at home, like a family barbecue or movie night, with more extravagant outings, like taking in a play or spending the day at an amusement park.

Step 4
Encourage "silly" activities that will put everyone at ease, encourage laughter and create memories that you'll talk about years from now. Have a funky fashion show, make pies and hold a pie-eating contest, or do karaoke.

Step 5
Tune out all distractions to concentrate on this time and having fun together. Family game night won't be as much fun for the kids if mom and dad are constantly checking their cell phones or watching a sporting event on television at the same time.

Step 6
Use the time to grow closer as a family. Insist that everyone leaves disagreements or outside stress at the door. If two of the kids begin to bicker during the activity, distract them or tell them to table the argument until the evening is over. Discuss their favorite parts of the evening the next day to encourage sharing.

WE ALSO FEATURED:

QUOTE OF THE DAY
Stanley C. Allyn
There is no use worrying about things over which you have no control, and if you have control, you can do something about them instead of worrying.
